Black and White Milkshake

There’s more than one way to make a chocolate shake, and this classic soda fountain version is a diner staple, combining creamy vanilla ice cream with rich chocolate syrup.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups vanilla ice cream (such as bluebell homemade vanilla)
  • 2 tablespoons whole milk
  • 2 tablespoons chocolate syrup (such as ghirardelli), plus more for garnish
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla bean paste or extract
  • pinch of kosher salt
  • whipped cream, maraschino cherry, rainbow or chocolate candy sprinkles, for garnish

Directions

  1. Place a 12-ounce milkshake glass or tall glass in freezer, and let chill for at least 15 minutes.
  2. Process ice cream, milk, chocolate syrup, vanilla bean paste, and salt in a blender on medium speed until smooth, 15 to 20 seconds.
  3. Drizzle additional chocolate syrup on the inside of the chilled glass. Pour milkshake into prepared glass. Garnish with whipped cream, cherry, and sprinkles. Serve immediately.
