What I Wore This Week On Our Secret Shoot (That Are Pretty Perfect Outfits For The Winter-To-Spring Transition)

Image

Drescription

For the last 6 days, we’ve had all hands on deck shooting a new line of something we are launching this spring (I’m writing this the day after we wrapped and celebrated so my brain is sooooo wiped I can barely think). We produced this in-house (a huge shout out to Gretch who killed it!!!! It went so well!!) which meant it was a huge financial investment on my part so the goal was to get as many photos, videos, reels, etc as possible in the six days – which meant that I had to change outfits like 6 times a day to take versions with and without me, lying down, being cozy, standing up, fancy portraits, etc. I’ve been doing this for 15 years so I’m pretty comfortable getting my photo taken, but it’s still crucial that I feel good in what I’m wearing. If I don’t feel good, I bring insecure energy, which makes the entire crew suffer because it takes so much longer to get the “right shot”. I’m SOOO grateful that Kaitlin can shoot so fast and makes me feel really comfortable:) Anyway, here are some of the outfits – admittedly that are on the more casual side. But I also think that if you are looking for some good winter-to-spring recs, you’ll find some great pieces in here. The fancier outfits were designer that I rented for the portraits so you’ll see them later :)

The jean shacket was a big investment and while I love it I’m hoping to exchange it for a smaller size but it’s really, really cute. The mini skirt is Madewell (via Nordstroms) and I’m wearing a small (Madewell sizing always runs big and I could have sized down but you know how they have like four xxxxxxs sizes which honestly make it confusing to know what size you are). Right now I’m solidly in between a 4 and 6 (so I guess a 5, LOL) if that helps – but I do wish I had bought an XS. It’s tweed and structured and pretty dang cute. The clogs are so comfy (for heels), I wear them all the time and even replaced them already because Buttercup ate one last year. And yes that bear shirt is rad.

I knew that this sweater with the big black stripe would be really cute on camera in a snuggled-up shot and it was. The stripe was really graphic and popped really well on camera. I wore it with my Old Navy boyfriend jeans that are still just so cute (and I think like $24 right now).

Another cozy look – An oversized cardigan (LOVE) with fisherman vibes, over the bear shirt (from The Great, which you know I love because they do everything casual just perfectly, but are such investments) with the same Old Navy jeans.

Don’t hate on my drop crotch R13 jeans – I however, do hate that they are so expensive, but I’ve worn them probably 80 times since I bought them last year for my big Rugs shoot (extremely drop crotch and def not everyone’s cup of tea but I find that they make every outfit look cool and are so comfortable!!). The dark burgundy snakeskin boots make any outfit look more professional, even beat up drop crotch jeans :)

Another oversized sweater with a great graphic sleeve punch. This sweater is a bit long and wide (I bought both a medium and a small to see which would fit better and they are both really really oversized. The jeans are Madewell’s barrel jeans that I think are excellent because they aren’t crazy high-waisted like a lot of barrel jeans (with big boobs and a short torso I can’t do both high-waisted and wide-legged). Big fan of these. And those kitten-heel boots are still in the mix – I wear them all the time when I want to dress something up without wearing high heels.

The Levi’s are vintage – sorry – that I’ve had forever. I really like this sweater from Rails – cable knit with pretty white stitching. Oh, and I ended up wearing those flats a ton (both in blue and nude) last week mostly because they were easy to pop on and off for our casual snuggling shots that I had to do. Big fan.

I was HIGHLY influenced by Kaitlin to get leopard pants and boy am I glad I did. These are SO CUTE and I didn’t realize how easy they are to make a basic outfit look stylish. I think the key is not dressing this up too much or it looks RHONJ, but these pants are dope and I love them with a casual top a lot (I wore it with wooden clogs, too which gave me nice height so that the cropped length was highlighted). Oh and yes, I’m wearing hair extensions in some of these shots :)

I bought this new sweatshirt from The Great and god, the slouchy cut is just so perfect but I wish that size 0 was in stock because it’s so oversized (but I know I’ll still wear it so much!!). The pants are old but still available from Free People and pretty awesome.

I bought two new denim jumpsuits because my dog ate the crotch out of my old one that I loved soooo much. This one (on the left) with long sleeves is from Amo and I bought both the small and medium, unsure of what size would work, but I’m returning the small because while it technically fit the waist is too snatched and therefore uncomfortable. I really think that brands need to get the memo that these jumpsuits shouldn’t be fitted or body-conscious – the whole point is to rock a utilitarian vibe and be comfortable – we don’t need our waist to look small, we want pockets and a good drape.

Pistola does this really well (the camo) and I bought this denim one and LOVED it even more than the camo since it’s just a bit thicker. So while I love the darker wash of the Amo a lot (and I’m keeping the medium size – which I’m wearing above), I think that this Pistola jumpsuit has a better, more casual shape that will be easier to throw on – it just hangs in a nicer way. But if you want to wear a jumpsuit to the office, perhaps the Amo one looks more professional and can be dressed up better, for sure (my goodness that was a lot of talk about jumpsuits – but I wear them a ton, and have for years, because they look good on camera and are so easy to work/style in as well so I feel like I’m a jumpsuit expert).

I promise the reveal of the shoot will be worth it (!) and hopefully, some of these outfits have given you some solid winter-to-spring outfit ideas.

How Often Should You Water Strawberries? What You Should Do for the Juiciest Fruits

Strawberries should be watered anytime the top inches of soil are dry. Water strawberries in the morning for best results. If leaves are discolored, fruits are not as flavorful, or growth is odd, check if you are over or underwatering your plant. The importance of properly watering strawberries cannot be overstated—without proper irrigation, you won’t be able to harvest the juicy fruit that makes growing your own strawberries a worthwhile effort. Strawberries have shallow root systems. This makes them especially sensitive to water deficit and a water-stressed plant can’t produce the juicy berries you are craving. Overwatering strawberries also backfires and causes problems such as rotting. Here is what you need to know about how much to water strawberries and when. How Often to Water Strawberries Water newly planted strawberries thoroughly immediately after planting and then daily for the first week after planting. In the second week after planting, switch to an every other day schedule, unless the weather is very hot and dry. As the plants get established, transition to a weekly watering schedule. During the active growing season between spring and fall, strawberries need at least 1 inch of water per week, or often enough to keep the top layer of soil moist. As it depends on different factors how often strawberries need water, the watering frequency ranges between daily to once or twice a week (less if there is abundant rainfall). Strawberries need the most water during the fruit production stage and up the harvest. If there is no abundant rainfall during harvest time, that’s the time when you need to water strawberry plants the most often. As soon as you see flowers form, start monitoring the soil moisture closely. Because container plants dry out much faster than strawberries planted in garden soil, potted strawberries need to be watered more often. Check the soil moisture level every morning and water the strawberries once or twice daily, depending on the weather and how fast the soil dries out. The smaller the pot, the more often you need to water. When to Water Strawberries While there is no hard-and-fast rule about how often you need to water strawberries, the best time of the day to water them is in the morning. Watering them early in the day prepares them for a hot day in the sun and it’s much better than at night when foliage takes much longer to dry, with the inherent risk of fungal diseases spreading. However, during a heat wave this should not deter you from watering the plants again in the evening if the soil is dry. Insert a finger in the soil—if the top inches feel dry, the plants should be watered no matter what time of the day it is. How to Water Strawberries The best method to water strawberries in garden soil is drip irrigation or a soaker hose. It not only saves water, but also keeps the foliage and fruit dry. Place the system so that it gets the soil around the plants wet but leave some distance to the growing berries. Water container-grown strawberries with a watering can, taking care not to get the leaves wet. No matter which watering method to use, water enough so that the soil is slightly damp but not dry or soggy. Signs of Overwatering Overwatering strawberries is not only wasteful, but it also has detrimental effects on the strawberries. These include: Root rot, a fungal infection that occurs in wet soil with poor drainage. Wilting of the plants, indicating oversaturated soil that lacks air pockets with oxygen. Brown or yellow leaves, especially at the tips of the leaves. Slow overall growth. Diluted flavor.1 If you have overwatered your strawberries, let them dry out before restarting a more conservative watering routine. Signs of Underwatering Typically, older strawberry plants are more prone to show signs of underwatering than young plants because they are less able to retain water. The following are typical indicators for underwatered plants: Dry, crisp leaves. Smaller leaves than those of properly watered strawberries. Less growth with fewer runners, crowns, and leaves. Fewer flowers, resulting in fewer and smaller fruits. Water your plants thoroughly and adjust your watering routine to avoid repeated water depravation, which weakens the plant further.

5 Common Flowers You Should Plant in August for More Blooms All Through Fall

Key Points Plant hardy fall bloomers like violas and asters to keep your garden blooming into cooler months. Choose blooming fuchsia for instant color that lasts through October or longer. These low-maintenance plants add color and charm to any fall garden or outdoor space. After reaping the benefits of beautiful blooms all summer, fall's the reality check we're not quite ready for: cooler temperatures and saying goodbye to our favorite flowers. With summer finally winding down, you may be looking to extend your gardening season as much as possible—and fall doesn't have to be the end. Luckily, we reached out to a garden pro to find out the top five flowers to plant right now for stunning blooms all fall long, and they did not disappoint. Meet the Expert Melissa Quinney is a garden expert and garden writer at Cabin Master, a United Kingdom-based fully-insulated garden room installation company. Winter-Flowering Violas These beautiful orange and purple flowers are excellent for creating fall colour, especially due to their tough nature and the way they’re able to bloom from autumn to winter with minimal attention, according to garden expert Melissa Quinney. "While they may look delicate, they are incredibly resilient," Quinney says. "Upon planting in August, gardeners can expect blooms within two to three weeks, and in milder climates, their blooms typically last well into winter.” USDA Zone: 3–8 Color Varieties: Purple, orange, white, blue, yellow, red Mature Size: 4–10 in. tall, 4–10 in. wide Want more gardening tips? Asters “While the aster is often overlooked in favour of other plants, like chrysanthemums, its daisy-like blooms in shades of purple and pink are excellent for brightening up fall gardens and attracting pollinators later into the year," Quinney says. If the plant is already established once planted, then blooms should appear within one to two weeks. If you plant asters from seed, then germination can take up to three weeks, with another six weeks until blooming. USDA Zone: 3-8 Color Varieties: Purple, pink, blue, white Mature Size: 1–6 ft. tall, 1–4 ft. wide Want more gardening tips? Fuschia If you're looking to add fuchsia to your garden for some fall flair, Quinney suggests planting your fuchsia while they're already in flower rather than planting from seed. Fuchsia grown from seed is unlikely to bloom in its first year, so planting one already in flower ensures a wow-worthy fall display. “When choosing a Fuchsia plant for a fall garden, it's important to look for its hardy variety," Quinney shares. "Perfect for planting near seating areas or outside garden rooms, hardy fuchsias can thrive well into fall with gorgeous pendant flowers in reds, purples, and pinks." USDA Zone: 10-11 Color Varieties: Red, pink, white, violet, purple Mature Size: 1 to 2 ft. tall, 1 to 2 ft. wide Penstemons Penstemons are hardy perennial plants with trumpet-shaped flowers that will keep blooming into autumn. If you plant penstemons when they're already flowering, they will bloom immediately and can continue to bloom until your area's first frost. "One of the major perks of having this plant in the garden is that it is drought-tolerant and doesn’t require much maintenance at all, helping it survive through fall," Quinney says. USDA Zone: 3-8 Color Varieties: Purple, blue, orange, red, yellow, pink, white Mature Size: 6 in. to 8 ft. tall and 8 to 20 in. wide Abelia x Grandiflora This semi-evergreen shrub has long-blooming, fragrant flowers in white, pink, and peach tones—and its foliage turns a stunning bronze shade in the fall. "It excels so well in the autumn because it’s low maintenance, and it provides great structure and colour later on in the year," Quinney says. "If planted while flowering, the Abelia x grandiflora will bloom from August through to fall, and its beautiful flowers and foliage display can last into October or November.” USDA Zone: 6 to 9 Color Varieties: pink, peach, white Mature Size: 4 to 6 feet

I Started My First Herb Garden for Under $30 at Trader Joe's, and Now It’s Thriving

I live in New York City, where paved parks are far more common than community gardens—so my lack of gardening experience shouldn't come as a surprise to you. Last year, I moved into a new apartment and have had the pleasure of having not just one, but two balconies. The catch is that they're both tiny, 4x6 foot spaces that can't accommodate much. Since this is my first time having private outdoor space, I was determined to make something of my balcony this year and got the brilliant idea: why don't I start an herb garden? The rest is history. Want more gardening tips? Sign up for our free gardening newsletter for our best growing tips, troubleshooting hacks, and more! How I Started My First Herb Garden for Under $30 I'll be very honest upfront: the bulk of my garden cost came from everything but the herbs. I got a small, affordable bag of garden soil for about $10 from my local grocery store, and reused some hanging balcony planters that I had bought for an earlier (failed) attempt at outdoor gardening. The herbs themselves were $2.99 a pop from Trader Joe's, and I got myself some rosemary, cilantro, and basil—all for less than $10! Purchasing planters can obviously push you over that $30 mark, but it doesn't have to. As long as you have a vessel you can drill a drainage hole into, anything can be a planter—even your coffee mugs. Once I got the herbs from Trader Joe's, I took them out of the nursery pot that they came in, gently removed the dirt from around the plant, and then replanted it into my balcony planter with the fresh soil. This might seem like cheating to some since I did not grow these herbs from seed, but I've been known to kill even the toughest plants, so I try to eliminate any factors working against me. And, for the record, there are a lot of factors working against me here: It's my first time gardening outdoors, I've killed more plants than I want to admit, my balcony honestly doesn't get a lot of sunlight, and I don't have any of the tools that most gardeners typically have. How I Keep My Herb Garden Thriving in a Small Space (Without Gardening Experience) I went with herbs because it felt like the most small-space-friendly thing to grow, and I needed something I wouldn't have to repot anytime soon. I was determined to give these plants everything they needed to thrive, so a lot of my garden maintenance looks like moving the pots around to ensure everyone gets the same amount of sunlight. I also established a weekly watering schedule, where I give my herbs a light watering if I know there's rain in the forecast, or a deeper watering if I know we're having a dry spell. Maintenance tasks have never been my thing (I only recently learned that pruning is actually necessary for many plants to thrive) but I've also taken to giving my plants a good prune with kitchen scissors every now and then to promote healthier growth. There was a moment when I thought my herbs with goners for sure, but they're bouncing back and thriving. I haven't harvested any of my herbs yet for use in my kitchen, but my balcony smells fantastic, so I'm winning regardless.

What We (And You All) Bought During The Biggest Sale Weekend Of The Year

Last weekend was the biggest online sales weekend of probably ALL TIME considering so many of us were stuck inside. And we just think it’s genuinely interesting to find out what the heck everyone was buying (and based on this post and this post, so do you:)). So…welcome to today’s post of “what we all bought and what you bought too during Black Friday/Cyber Monday!!” Now let’s dig right in and start with Em… EMILY This last weekend I bought A BUNCH of my kids’ Christmas presents (I feel SO on top of it this year) and this holiday candle making kit was one of them. Honestly, we might break into this early because you all know how much I love Christmas crafts and I might be more excited for this than my own kids. I bought these leggings for me and matching ones for Birdie because it’s cold up here and it’s getting even colder. I can never have enough fleece leggings and for $20 for mine and $10 for Birdie, these are a great buy for the price. I’m so excited for my kids to play this educational STEM game. Any game that’s fun AND educational is a big win in my book (homeschooling is HARD), and this is one I think Charlie will get very excited about. You can configure this game in a bunch of different ways to make a light turn on or a fan move…(watch the video to see what I mean). I call it engineering class :) I bought parkas for me and the kids from Uniqlo (seriously we cannot get enough jackets/beanies/warm anything up here). This pink one is for Birdie (she only wears things with pink, purple, or unicorns on it), this matching blue one is for Charlie, and then I couldn’t help but grab a longer navy version for myself…they’re all very affordable for winter puffer jackets & I love how light and comfy they are. JESS I have been eyeing this chunky boot trend for a minute and these were both cute and far more affordable than most of the others I was looking at. Fingers crossed they are a hit! P.S. I sent them to Veronica for style approval and she said that she loved them so my hopes are really high now:) When I saw this necklace on Em’s gift guide I knew I wanted it. It’s so cute, very hip, AND really affordable. Basically. a no brainer and can’t wait to add it to my 2021 everyday look :) Ok, this was my big splurge but hear me out. I live in an ooooold building with oooold pipes. A couple of weeks ago was just one of those “I don’t even have time to shower” kinda weeks…so I didn’t. Then when I went to turn on the water…it was brown for 2 seconds. Not ideal. SO since I left my more affordable filtered shower head at my old apartment, I decided that it was time to upgrade. I mean why buy nice beauty products if I’m showing in rust water, right? (I also bought mine at Bed Bath & Beyond but it’s currently sold out there) In my gift guide, I linked to the Target version of these but they were sold out everywhere around me AND couldn’t ship. So I was stoked to find these puppies at Anthro that are so similar (although more expensive). I can’t wait to feel the fanciest and the most cozy in my home. MALLORY If I’m being completely real I went to my gift guide and was checking out what was on sale (lol) during Black Friday. I was SO happy to find this workout set that I’ve been watching for QUITE some time was $60 off. I can’t wait to wear it and workout in it every day and feel cute but also a little extra. I’m also excited to mix and match the top and the leggings with some of the workout clothes I already have! I grabbed these hoops and it’s matching ring for someone super secretive in my life (and I think she’s gonna know who it is if she reads it and to be honest I’m nervous), but I’m very excited about it because there’s no better gift than good quality gold jewelry. NOTO lip stain (how many times have I linked this now?? It’s too good) I bought a few of these (in varying colors) for pretty much everyone I know for Christmas. My personal favorite colors are the Ono Ono (which is more orang-ey) and Touch (which is more pink-ey) And since they’re so good I also snuck the one color I’ve been eyeing for myself into my cart…this beautiful deep red HOLLAAA. I got a pair of these baddies for another special person in my life. I’ve come to find that these are the BEST workout and walking shoes, which is critical because all we do for fun these days is go on long walks (trying to hit that 10,000 steps a day ya feel?). SO I got these and am very excited to give them to a very special lady…when she tried mine on she was like “WOAH IT’S LIKE WALKING ON A CLOUD THEY’RE SO COMFY” so I can’t wait for her to have a pair of her own :) CAITLIN I own one of these robes and I love it, so I bought one for my mom (and an extra one for me, too!!). They’re so plush and cozy and luxe and I wanted to share the warmth. These boots are A. LOT. – especially for my hometown – but I think I love them??? I’ve been getting Instagram ads for them for months and figured that I’d finally give them a whirl at 20% off. They’re getting here next Saturday and I’ll keep y’all updated! I’ve had an iPhone 7 Plus for 4 years and it is BUSTED – there are pieces loose inside and it sounds WILD whenever it vibrates – but I finally bit the bullet and ordered an iPhone 12!!! I’ve been lusting after these beautiful leather wireless charging trays from Courant for a while and got one in cream and one in pink for my entryway and nightstand. I’m excited for the phone but REALLY excited for these. RYANN This is another Madewell purchase because WHY NOT. I’ve actually have been eyeing this top for a while as I think it’d be a really cute and versatile staple in my wardrobe. It’s still very much on sale (only $25!) and reviews say it’s comfy enough to be loungewear but cute enough to wear with jeans and boots. SOLD! I bought this custom necklace for my sister in law who is having her first baby in December (!!!). I think we all love a “Mama” necklace and this shop has fantastic reviews and you can’t beat the price! I ordered myself a pair of jeans which will come as a shock to absolutely no one. To be fair, I actually did need new ones because the holidays + a stay at home order equals my jeans miraculously shrinking on me!! So weird. I think we can all agree that Madewell’s sale was BONKERS and I couldn’t pass up these jeans that were only $30 with the 50% off deal. Now they are $60 which is still a steal. This is another gift from me to me because I’ve actually wanted this perfume for YEARS. It’s really a perfect everyday scent that is not to overwhelming and not too sweet. I’ve been staring out my window waiting for it to be delivered every since I purchased it. 5. ALBIE’S GLITTER NUTCRACKERS Albie’s glitter nutcrackers did GREAT!!! These are really cute and so Christmasy and fun. Here’s what she said about them…”Meet my very first holiday purchase for the new house! My daughter’s first thoughts were “they look like you and dad” and that made my heart smile. Hopefully, this’ll be the first of many more decor pieces that reflect us as a family.” 4. EMILY’S ETSY WOODEN MUSIC BOX WE LOVE ETSY. Em bought this wooden music box for her kids and now I wanna buy one for myself (is that weird?) Anyway, I totally get why it sold so well (especially because custom anything feels extra special in 2020). 3. ANTHROPOLOGIE LOUNGE SET Caitlin linked this in her AWESOME Black Friday post and it looks so cute and comfy NO WONDER it sold so well. We’re all pretty much living in lounge sets right now, or as we like to call them “day pajamas.” 2. MALLORY’S J. CREW DRESS In a shocking turn of events, my dress was #2!! I wore this dress to Thanksgiving dinner with my immediate family (who I’ve been quarantining with, don’t worry) and I’m planning to wear it to Christmas Eve dinner (also with my family) and for every holiday every year to come. PLUS I FOUND OUT AFTER I BOUGHT IT THAT IT HAS POCKETS. Oh and now it’s 46% off (which is more than it originally was when I linked it). Enjoy!! 1. EMILY’S PERFUME Understandably, Em’s perfume did the BEST!! Here’s what she had to say about it “I decided that this is the year I’m going to try to smell good. It’s not that I smelled bad before, but I’ve NEVER worn perfume and I don’t have a ‘scent’. After begging my more beauty/smell expert friends they both agreed that Kai smells good on literally everyone and nobody doesn’t not like it. I put it on last night after a bath and snuggled up to watch a movie with the kids and Brian and everyone, EVERYONE, was like ‘mama you smell goooooood’. It’s not overpowering, just a nice floral/gardenia scent that I LOVE. I bought the lotion and the roller ball. Brian is a BIG fan :)” So if you are wanting a fresh and pretty new scent this one is a VERY good and safe bet.
