We Asked Hydrangea Specialists for Their Top Care Tips, and They'll Save Even the Droopiest Flowers

Drescription

Throughout the U.S., hydrangeas are the quintessential summer flower. With their full, round blossoms and stunning array of colors, they’re a perfect addition to a seasonal flower garden, especially if you’re looking to add bushes and shrubs to the mix.

So, what does growing hydrangeas require? We checked in with a few gardening pros with a particular aptitude for this beloved shrub to find out some top tips.

Meet the Expert

Laura Root is a gardening expert and the senior merchant of live plants and hardgoods for Jackson & Perkins.

Linda Vater is the plant expert for Southern Living® Plant Collection.

Plant in Early Spring or Fall

If you’re hoping to add hydrangeas to your yard, gardening pro Laura Root says the best time to plant these beauties is in early spring or fall.

“This allows for cooler temperatures and more consistent moisture, which helps the plants establish strong roots before the stress of summer heat or winter cold sets in,” she says.

Consider Your Location

While hydrangeas grow well throughout much of the US, plant pro Linda Vater still suggests checking your USDA zone.

“Many popular species, like Hydrangea macrophylla, are hardy in Zones 5–9, representing a broad swath of the United States,” she says, before noting that this is why personal considerations are important, too.

“For example, in more northerly regions, spring planting allows optimal time for root development before winter’s chill sets in,” says Vater. “In the [southern U.S.], fall planting is often ideal to allow a long lead time to the region’s intense summer heat.”

But no matter where you are, Vater says mid-summer planting should be avoided due to heat stress and water needs of newly planted hydrangeas.

Keep Soil Moist and Drained

According to Root, hydrangeas require moist, well-draining soil that’s rich in organic matter.

“They prefer consistent moisture and soil that stays damp but not soggy,” she says. “Over-watering can cause root rot, while letting the soil dry out stresses the plant.”

Be sure to stick to a reliable watering schedule—especially if you’re having a dry season or cultivating newer hydrangea shrubs.

“It’s important to water consistently during your hydrangea’s first year to support healthy root establishment,” says Vater.

Adjust pH Levels for Desired Colors

Along with moisture levels, it’s also important to note your soil’s pH, as this is important for both your hydrangea’s health and the color of its blooms.

“In some varieties, acidic soil promotes blue blooms, while alkaline soil encourages pink flowers,” Root says. “Use a soil acidifier for blue blooms or garden lime for pink blooms.”

However, don’t adjust your soil’s pH too dramatically, or without testing first.

“Making drastic changes without testing can limit nutrient uptake and harm the plant,” she says.

Expect Blooms in Late Spring Through Summer

If you’re excited to clip your hydrangeas for indoor arrangements, Root says healthy plants are known for their long bloom times. In fact, you should see flowers appear from late spring through summer, depending on the variety you’ve planted.

“Once established, and with proper care, gardeners can look forward to months of beautiful blooms during the growing season,” she says.

Avoid Clay Soil

Along with keeping your soil watered at the correct levels and monitoring the pH, Root says you should also avoid heavy clay soils because they trap too much moisture.

However, if you do have this kind of soil, there are things you can do. Root suggests amending with organic matter to improve drainage.

Consider Your Space Needs

Depending on your space and location of your hydrangea, it’s important to consider the size. Some can grow up to 20 feet, while others are fairly compact.

“White Wedding fits well in tight spaces and containers and requires little pruning to maintain its size,” Vater says.

But others—such as the Hydrangea macrophylla which is considered the largest variety—can require much more space.

Most Recommended Hydrangea Varieties

Both Vater and Root shared their top picks for hydrangea varieties.

Hydrangea macrophylla (Bigleaf): Root recommends these for their large, colorful blooms that change color with pH. These can also be compact and drought-tolerant, and Vater notes that this variety is reliably hardy throughout much of the U.S.

Hydrangea arborescens (Smooth): This one has showy white blooms and is very adaptable.

White Wedding Hydrangea: Vater explains these are abundant in flowers and well-suited to small spaces like containers and cut flower gardens.

Heart Throb Hydrangea: Its vibrant cherry red color is edged in vibrant green, which Vater says becomes more prominent over time.

Dear Dolores Hydrangea: Vater says this is perfect if you want a classic pink hydrangea in your garden.

It’s Not Too Late—6 Fast-Growing Crops You Can Still Plant in Late July

For gardeners, spring is all about planting seeds and starts to give summer crops ample time to reach maturity. But planting doesn't have to end just because summer is in full swing. In fact, there are plenty of quick-growing crops you can plant in July that will mature in time for a fall or even late summer harvest. Some of these plants, like greens, simply grow quickly, especially with summer's warm temperatures and abundant sunlight, while others are bred to be "early" varieties that mature quickly. Whether you've already harvested spring or early summer crops and want to plant something in their place or simply got a late start on gardening this year, you can still plant in July to enjoy a harvest later in the season. Here are 6 fast-growing crops to consider for high summer planting in your garden. Beans Both pole beans and bush beans can be planted in July for a late summer or early fall harvest. Plant seed in a garden bed with full sun and loamy, moist, well-drained soil. Keep the soil evenly moist as the plants grow, and be sure to provide pole varieties with stakes, a trellis, or other support for them to climb. Pick the beans when their pods are flat and tender to eat them as green beans, allow them to size up in the pod for fresh shell beans, or let them dry on the vine and harvest them at the end of the season to use them as dry beans. Radishes Fast-growing radishes are an ideal addition to your vegetable garden starting in mid-July. Radishes require six to eight hours of direct sunlight per day and rich, well-drained soil to thrive. Many small varieties are ready to harvest in about a month from planting the seed. Plant again every two weeks through September to extend your radish harvest into fall. Kale Kale, collards, and other brassicas are ideal to seed in late July or early August for an abundant crop of greens in fall. Seed kale in the ground or in a container in a spot that receives rich, well-drained soil and full to part sun. Plants take roughly three months from seeding to mature and are ready to pick once they're about 12 inches tall. However, you can harvest tender leaves as baby kale to use in salads or cooking in as little as 20 to 30 days. Carrots Carrots take longer to mature than some of the fast-growing vegetables on this list, but July isn't too late to plant seed for a late summer or early fall crop. Direct seed carrots in the ground or in a container at least 12 inches deep. Choose a spot with full sun and rich, well-drained soil, or amend the site with compost before planting. Water consistently to keep carrots from splitting or cracking. Some carrot varieties can be ready to harvest in about 50 days, while others take 75 days to mature. Waiting until after your region's first frost can help your carrots taste sweeter. Beets Another fast-growing root vegetable, beets are ideal to seed in July for a late summer or early fall crop. Their seeds can germinate in hot summer temperatures up to 90°F, and the plants are also frost-tolerant. Plant beet seeds in a spot that has moist, well-drained soil and gets full to part sun (though they'll grow best with at least six hours of direct sunlight per day). If you're not a fan of the earthy flavor of red beets, consider planting golden or Chioggia varieties, which taste milder. Cover Crops While it doesn't result in an edible harvest, July could be a great time to plant a cover crop. Cover crops, also called green manure, are plants like legumes, grasses, and some brassicas that are grown before, after, or between vegetable crops to add nutrition, keep weeds down, and support overall soil health. Cover crops like legumes are often planted in spring, but quick-growing grasses like winter rye, winter wheat, annual ryegrass, and oats can be planted in midsummer or late summer after you harvest vegetables. You can let grasses planted as cover crops grow for at least one month before turning over the bed to terminate the crop. Another option is to allow the cover crop to overwinter, then turn it in before planting the following spring. However, it's important to terminate the crop before it goes to seed.

20 Summer Office Outfit Ideas You’ll Be Excited To Wear (Professional And Casual Options)

Last week, I went on a hike with a friend who was lamenting about trying to find good summer office clothes, or even just some good summer office outfit ideas. She works in a creative field, so it's less blazers and slacks and more fun but modest, and yet it's still been a struggle. Clearly, dressing a bit more conservatively is required in most workplaces, but also sweating to death is not what anyone wants. So I thought maybe some of you might also be struggling as well, since more jobs are requiring in-office attendance, and I could offer my online window shopping services. I created 20 outfit combos for both more formal workplaces and more casual workplaces. And don't worry, I ran these all by my best friend, who has primarily worked in non-casual offices, and I got her stamp of approval. We spend A LOT of time working, and there's no reason that you can't look forward to dressing for the office. The "Professional" Looks Starting strong with a very affordable Old Navy short-suit combo paired with an airy white blouse from Everlane. The light oatmeal color is so pretty and summery while still looking professional. The shorts have a 5" inseam, so they are on the longer side depending on how long your legs are:) While Emily didn't try on this exact set, she did do an Old Navy try-on last year with similar pieces and loved them. What's also great about the top is that it's interesting and chic AND modest enough to wear without the blazer. Then for the combo on the right, I'm pretty in love with that short-sleeved vest top. It's so refined yet cool! Gives a suit look, but much better for hot weather. It also comes in black. Then I wanted to pair it with a light-colored colored pant and these were extra perfect because of the subtle pinstripe that complements the white top. Throw a cute little pump heel on, and you are so set. Both of these combos are each under $200 total. I love a neutral look as much as the next person, but a little color and pattern never hurt anyone...especially in the summer! Let's start with the combo to our left. When I saw that belted green gingham blazer, I knew I had to build an outfit around it (FYI it's under $80). It's so fun but not "too wild" and looks just as good open, which is why I included a fitted tank. I chose a more cropped tank because those navy pants are stretchy and super high waisted, so tucking in a long top probably isn't going to look the best. I just think this is fun, but modern and gives "cool powerhouse". That blazer would also be so cute with jeans and flats. Now, for a more loose-fitted look, I equally love both of the pieces in the look on the right. The top is just edgy enough with the double belts and modest enough with the capped sleeves. No jacket needed with this one. Oh, and how great are those blue and white striped pants? Fun, breezy, and office-approved. Ok, so this little short-sleeved blazer is the most expensive piece in this post, but it's also MAJORLY discounted from its original price. Plus, it's so good that I was practically forced (by my heart) to include it. And while you could easily pair it was a cute pair of trousers or jeans, I love the idea of mixing it with this airy midi skirt. It's elevated, cool, and a little unexpected. One of my favorite of these summer office outfit ideas :) These two lean the most casual of the professional looks, but still feel dressier to me, so here goes! First off, THOSE RED STRIPE PANTS. I'm obsessed. So chic, so comfy, and if you wanted the whole set, it does have a matching blazer. But if you want to keep the costs down, I love this cool, boxy button-up to pair with it. You will be the coolest-dressed person in your office for sure. You could pair this look with either a heel, a pretty sandal, or a sleek sneaker. It all depends on your office's dress code. Then, for the look on the right, I really liked the mix of brown tones with a pop of blue to add some more excitement. Those trousers have a crazy high rating and are currently on sale for $28 (originally $40). I really love that jacket, and while summer is hot, the mornings can be chilly, so why not have a cute jacket on the way in:) Onto our casual options! The "Casual" Looks Let me first say that if you haven't checked out the Loft in a minute, may I suggest you take a peek, as both of the trousers above are from there. Cute, right!? They each have a little something fun about them. Caitlin told us that Loft was having an "Abercrombie-like" renaissance, and I have to agree. For the look on the left, I love the seam down the front of the legs. Just adds a simple pop. Plus, the color is beautiful, and paired with the cool, loose, denim-like striped top, it's a slam dunk. Then, for the look on the right, the pants are really the showstoppers with those pockets, so a simple tee is a great pairing. But what is clearly special about this tee is the side ruching. Such a little detail that makes the whole piece. Ok, so most of the outfits going forward, I think are also just great summer outfits. Wear them to the office, wear them to brunch, or wherever else you fancy. For the outfit on the left, that wildly cute top is under $20. Yes, you read that right. It hugs all the right spots, while not being too revealing, and giving that wonderful loose fit around the waist. The jeans are also on a truly great sale ($25!!) and have such a fun high-waisted, wide-leg cut. An easy and non-boring outfit. Now, the look on the right screams "Emily Henderson". That blouse is under $50 and so pretty — the color, the detailing, the cut. Then those are Em's favorite barrel jeans that aren't too "barrel-y". The pockets and the little dart above the knees make them look so cool. Let's layer a bit, shall we? First off, I know these lightweight cargo pants might not be everyone's cup of tea, but if you are looking to step outside your normal style a little, I think they are so great...and look extremely comfortable. Then, for a slightly more elevated tank, I really love this wine colored, cinched option. Flattering and modest. But if you want a little extra pattern and fun (or if you have a chilly office), I love this cropped striped button-up! Layer it over or wear it by itself, you have options. Oh, you knew I was going to include some striped tees. It's EHD law. For the look on the left, it's all in the details. That side-tie tank is so fun yet feels classic. Those jeans (from my go-to denim retailer, Everlane) are pretty standard until you get to that freaking cool seam at the calf. Throw on that boxy green Oxford, opened as a little jacket for a little warmth in the AC, and baby, you have a stylish little look. But if you want to lean more into that coastal, nautical style, then the combo on the right could be for you. A truly classic striped tee, CUTE long white shorts, and a little cardigan. What's not to love? This is where I got a little wild:) So not sure what's come over me, but I am extremely into the look on the left. I used to dabble more into leopard years ago, but not until recently have I felt the urge to dip my toe back in. Emily and photographer Kaitlin have leopard denim, and they look so cool in them. So when I saw these ultra-soft jeans from Gap, I thought maybe it's my time. But for a work outfit, I do think that pairing these pants with a more tailored top is a great contrast that elevates the whole look. This light pink vest is such a fun pop of color and makes me want this whole outfit even more. And since playfulness is the essence of these two looks, I really loved the idea of this vacation-inspired look on the right (that you could also very much wear on a summer vacation). Those striped shorts are amazing and a little fitted, which is great to pair with that slightly oversized fruit shirt. I mean, if you've been wanting to try out the fruit fashion trend, there isn't a better time than now:) The Dresses Since dresses are less of a combo situation, I thought I'd just add a few at the end. First up is that beautiful reddish coral dress from Sezane. You could wear it for almost any occasion, and it would be perfect. That side tie is so chic. It comes in other colors, too. Then the linen maxi with those sweet puff sleeves is also extremely versatile. Cute, modest, flattering, and looks so comfortable. It also comes in other colors and patterns. Quince really does have beautiful clothes for great prices, and the dress on the left is a perfect example of that. It's under $70, comes in a ton of colors, and the cut would look amazing on anyone. Lastly, the sleeveless dress on the right is new from Madewell, and I love it. Again, great for summer because it's sleeveless and breezy. The colors are chic, and the pattern makes it interesting. Big fan and would look perfect with a jean jacket:) I truly hope these were helpful summer office outfit ideas, as we are officially in summer. That 90 weather is here but that doesn't mean we have to suffer in office clothes we don't love. I also think so many of these pieces can easily mix and match with each other so have fun if you are on the hunt. Love you, mean it.

I Created 6 Different Travel Outfits With Just 9 Pieces to Keep My Suitcase Light—Here’s How I Did It

I'm preparing for several upcoming events that involve air travel. In fact, I'm currently on a trip, visiting some old friends, and the last thing I want to worry about is dragging my heavy luggage from destination to destination. As part of my effort to pack lightly, I have already dedicated my Calpak Luka Soft-Sided Mini Carry-On Luggage for several trips in my calendar in the next few months. As you can imagine, the mini carry-on bag has only so much room, so it all comes down to packing strategically. I typically plan out a different outfit every day, but with so little space this time around, I need to make the most out of a handful of pieces. So, I planned out six different outfit ideas using just these nine styles from Old Navy, Quince, and more. Travel-Friendly Fashion Finds Anrabess 2-Piece Wide-Leg Pants and Tank Set, $36 (was $45); amazon.com A New Day Button-Front Cardigan, $35; target.com Anrabess Linen-Blend Pants, $36; amazon.com Automet Cap-Sleeve Tee, $13; amazon.com Odoly Adjustable Buckle Sandals, $19 with coupon (was $24); amazon.com Old Navy Sleeveless Button-Front Mini Dress, $35; oldnavy.com Anrabess 2-Piece Wide-Leg Pants and Tank Set A matching set is a travel-friendly essential because you can always take it apart to wear with other separates. I love a nice, cohesive look on its own, but you can't beat this cute tank with chino shorts or relaxed straight-leg jeans. I plan to pair the wide-leg pants with an adorable, tiered tank for another day as well. A New Day Button-Front Cardigan I often get cold, no matter where I am, so I like to carry a cardigan with me. This crocheted number will make a simple top feel like a base layer. This is one of my favorite pieces for unpredictable weather because it's incredibly chic while still keeping me warm when I need it. Additionally, it goes well with just about anything, whether it's a matching set or a little dress. Anrabess Linen-Blend Pants A neutral pair of linen pants is a must-have for the season. Not only are they lightweight and soft, but they also mesh well with a wide range of tops, including blouses, tanks, simple tees, button-downs, and more. I really like how the drawstring waistband cinches me in as well, and I plan to wear these well into fall. Automet Cap-Sleeve Tee I consider this minimalist cap-sleeve T-shirt a style staple. I'd certainly build an entire outfit around it because there are endless ways to wear it. My plan is to team this soft tee with my black chino shorts for one day and with my linen pants on another. But it would also work well with a cute wrap skirt. Don't miss a few more of my favorite travel-friendly pieces below. 30 CUTE Pull-On Shorts For Our Most Comfortable Spring/Summer Yet

The time of year is upon us when we tend to start thinking about shorts. We get to free our bottom limbs and run free! But we must not forget that traditional jean shorts are not the only option. Actually, let’s just get rid of zippers and buttons entirely! That’s right folks, I’m talking about cute, fashionable, comfortable pull-on shorts. In the words of Kim Cattrall, “I don’t want to be in a situation for even an hour where I’m not enjoying myself”. While she wasn’t necessarily talking about zippered/buttoned shorts, it could easily be included in the meaning. Pull-on shorts are inherently the most comfortable and least restricting type of shorts. The team has been singing their praises for years. But for some reason, we’ve only ever done posts dedicated to the more athletic versions. Well, that stops today because we are on the hunt and thought you might be too. Let’s start. These were the shorts that inspired this post. Marlee was the one to actually suggest this post idea because she had just started her pull-on short search. Naturally, we all agreed it was a great idea because we love a pull-on short and these ones were total winners. They are a little more expensive, but are sustainably made (from Reformation), and are so classic that they will never so out of style. For a similar stripe with a little more going on detail-wise, how fun are these?! I love the frayed hem, the paperbag waist, and how the stripes also have a little design within them. These would be great to throw on around town or perfect next to a body of water. Perfect for at home or on vacation. They also come in a solid patterned cream version (you’ll get what I mean when you look at them). Damson Madder is a very cool London-based, sustainable brand that my cool friend told me about last year. Needless to say, I was happy to see that Anthro did a collab with them! They are known for their fits and these shorts are so freaking cute. Definitely in the world of the boxer shorts trend but a little more refined. But if you love the red stripe look but want more of a nautical feel, these J. Crew ones are awesome. Vibrant but classic. FYI, these shorts are the most expensive on the list but also…look at them. These heavenly beauts are SO fun and since they’re from Farm Rio, I know without a doubt super high quality. The details are so special! It is a part of a set (here’s the top) but these could easily be worn with so many other tops. A loose white button-up would be effortless. These definitely give “vacation” but I say let home feel like a vacation too when you pop these cuties on. Another fun option! I love the color (but they also come in sand with a plus size option), that statement tie at the top, and the stitching. Plus, the length is so nice. No chance of those cheeks saying hello:) They are just a little more tailored and special than your average pull-on short. Sorry for the blurry photo but it was the best I could do. Anyway, how great is that green! These are also in that boxer short trend category which I am very tempted to try. They just look so damn comfy but also cute. I know it’s not for everyone but at the price I might give it a whirl. Plus, so great for poolside, right? (But can we also talk about the cuffs of the top??) I’m going to be honest, I didn’t know about the viral “denim” sweatpants Em was wearing in this post until I looked it up after she talked about them. They sound INCREDIBLE. So when I saw they had a shorts version, I HAD to include them. Duh. They come in three different washes (one lighter and one darker than the one pictured above), and if they are nearly as comfortable as everyone says the pants are, these are a homerun. But if you want a pull-on short that isn’t printed to look like a jean but is still comfy here are two great options under $50. The ones on the left do not have any stretch (aside from the elastic band) but will give you a cool relaxed look. Love that wash color. Then those cuties on the right have that sweet ruffled hem. They are also lower rise so keep that in mind whether that’s your preference or not. A Madewell soft, denim boxer short? Sign me up! Easy, soft to the touch, cute, and made with their “summer-friendly cotton-blend Airy Denim”. That means they are perfect for the warmer weather. I also know Caitlin and Arlyn have been big fans of Madewell’s pull-on shorts in the past. Why yes, you can be this chic for $25;) I mean get outta here, right? These tonal stripes and that sleek waistband are so good. Just enough color without it looking too bold. You could wear these to the office or on vacation, easily. They also have a bunch of other colors and pattern options if you are interested:) More “boxers” but that pocket is so cute! I just couldn’t resist. Also from Madewell, also super light and also extremely comfortable. These two feel less boxer-like to me because of the cuts (absolutely love how the sides are shorter) and the drawstring detail. The dark navy ones also come in a bright green and the light blue ones have a matching button-up top. These are great swim coverups too! And if you love a drawstring but not a print, these Reformation shorts are beautiful. So simple but so versatile. They come in three other neutral colors and these would be a breeze to dress up or down. For some additional solids, I adore the pockets on the Madewell cuties on the left. They come in 5 other color and pattern options but the style is what really makes them look less like a pull-on and more like a “normal short”. They’ll never know how comfortable you are! Then for a steal at $22, these Old Navy ones are the perfect throw-on-and-go pair that also come in seven other colors:) Aside from the sweet gingham print (it also comes in a butter yellow) I really love the texture of these shorts. They are made to look super relaxed and boy do they. Also, that price? SO GOOD. More Stripes but with really fun details! The contrast pattern trim on the pockets and the cuffed bottoms on the left shorts make me want to add to cart immediately. Then if you like a little metallic moment in your pull-on shorts there is a silver thread in the shorts on the right you’ll love. Fun but neutral:) Stripes aren’t the only pattern we love. These floral cuties are so fun! They come in seven other colors in petite, standard and plus sizes. The options are endless and CUTE. Would you believe these are Abercrombie? I know we’ve been raving about their evolution for a minute but it’s still so exciting! These mid-rise (yes!)summertime linen shorts are playful, chic, and highly rated. If shells aren’t your style they have seven other options to choose from. The florals continue on:) Not really sure why the shorts on the left are being called a skort because in every photo they really look like shorts but I wouldn’t be mad about either way. Love the high waist, the flowy bottom, and that subtle but playful print. I think if I had to choose a floral short it would be these ones on the right:) I can’t get enough of that pattern and for whatever reason they almost feel slightly sporty? I just think they are so freaking fun. These are the same AE ones from the beginning of these post but I really loved these colors and pattern:) Ok, onto the next! A flared “skirty” short? CUTE! I’m a big olive green fan (as you’ll see) and the cut/seams of these are so good. For the shorts on the right, I know they are way sportier than all the other ones but I couldn’t help myself and had to include. LOVE the patterned drawstring, such a fun addition to make something simple a little extra special. And those pockets are cool too! These last two options will likely be a little style-specific but I love them so much. These ones how overly relaxed and kinda baggy these are. They are mid-rise, mid-length, and cut up on the sides so have have a little more of a sexy shape. I want a pair bad! Oh and there are two different denim wash options. Those pockets are so sick. It’s almost like the coolest construction belt you’ve ever seen. I couldn’t decide which was I like more so I put in both. These are also on my fashion wish list! That’s it from me. If you’ve been needing some shorts I truly hope this was helpful. No need to not be the most comfortable (but cute) at any given moment, right? Love you, mean it.
