The 4 Active But CUTE Swimsuits I Bought To Play With My Kids On Spring Break (+ Our Favorite Past Swimsuit Posts)

Drescription

It’s that special time of year (ha) – our tans aren’t on yet (well, they are for some of us LOL) and we usually aren’t as “ready” in all the ways we want to be, but alas swimsuit season is upon and we should feel great regardless. I mean it’s about to be warm and we can be outside as much as we want! Every year we do swimsuits post with different body sizes, preferences, price points, etc – but all driven by what we feel really good in because if you don’t, you won’t wear them. It’s not easy but when you have one you love it makes spring/summer life so much easier and is such a confidence boost.

I have some new ones that I bought specifically for our Belize trip which was very, very active (think more spelunking and kayaking than cute beach outfits). So below you’ll find what I bought and wore for those purposes.

I wore this rashguard suit no less than 6 times over the 10 days because the Caribbean sun was so hot on my fair flesh and reapplying sunscreen was its own full-time job (and not great for the water). And while the princess sleeves might be too cutesy for a lot of people, I’m telling you – this suit is FLATTERING. I had it in blue stripes (til I burst the zipper after wearing it 20 times) and in rainbow (which is admittedly a bit toddler-esque but I wore it during Pride month a lot). I don’t love the belt they sell with it, but if you are into belted suits that’s an add-on. So I just bought the red and love it. The other two styles had a bra shelf for support and this one didn’t, but I had already bought their matching red bikini top to go underneath it (shown in the photo). It’s a compression suit, meaning that it has 2-3 layers that hold you IN without being uncomfortable (I’m wearing a small). It is very smoothing and shows no little bumps and diminishes pouches if that’s of interest to you (it is for me). Yes, they are so expensive and I wish they weren’t. But I wore this suit snorkeling then to the pool then to lunch then to dinner, with swimshorts or those lightweight jean shorts – I lived in it. And I felt really cute and protected all day. 10/10 (but wish this one had the support shelf, TBD).

OK. This is another magical suit from TA3 that frankly, makes your body look really hourglass-y (without the corset back). I wore this A LOT which Brian was thrilled about, LOL. I’m wearing a small and the bust is a bit small, but still fits (these TA3 suits are made for curvier gals to enhance and tuck, and boy do they work). If you have smaller love pillows you might not want this type of constriction nor will it be as figure-flattering. But for curvier ladies, it’s been game-changing. They also have long or short torso options. My only beef with this company is that I want less crazy bright colors. This comes in black which I’m going to buy as well after wearing and loving this one so much in Belize. Oh, and it’s a medium-rise in the leg which is so flattering and doesn’t cut in at all (but is a little bit cheeky in a good way). I would have shot it that way for this post but I had yet to get waxed before my trip, so…

This one-piece is also a compression suit from Stylest and I love the square neck and the white stripes. I ended up wearing this one only once because I think I need to size up (this is a small) so I was spilling over the top a lot, and not in a good way. So I wish I had bought the medium instead (and still might). It also cuts in a bit around the thigh (low cut) but I think that’s due to being a bit too small.

Ah, the famous Andie Malibu swimsuit. Five of my friends have this suit because it’s so easy to wear, comfortable, supportive (it has a shelf), and looks like a tank top so it is the best “around town on vacation” suit in case you should want to jump in (which we did). I wore this cave tubing, kayaking in the mangroves, and in town a bunch (as well as at the pool/beach). I would love a brighter blue version or stripes on it. It’s definitely my go-to in Portland for the hot tub, too. HUGE fan (and ready for some new colors!)

Not every suit 100% worked for everyone so we give our honest reviews.

Unphotoshopped Women Honestly Review Summersalt’s 3 Bestselling Swimsuits

This post was our first Summersalt review post where we got to include a couple of our wonderful contributors. Again, always honest and never any photoshopping!

Where To Buy ALL The Best Swimsuits (Affordable, Black Owned, AND Size-Inclusive) – Because I’ve Been Heavily Insta-Marketed, Believe Me

Not all of our swimsuit posts still have the suits available but we did a post about 27 different swimwear brands that you can shop from if you are looking for some new options!

Another Swimsuit Review: This Time On 27 Different Women With Different Bodies & Swimwear Needs

This post is one of those that likely a lot of the suits aren’t available but I wanted to include it in this post because we did a reader call out where we asked if anyone had any swimsuit recommendations. They would just need to take a photo of them in their suit, write a little blurb, and then I would of course pay them since I know how vulnerable it can be putting yourself on the internet in a swimsuit. But wow were we blown away by these beautiful women! If you want a feel-good post as we enter swimsuit season, this is a great one.

Hope this was helpful on the swimsuit search journey this year.

A Pink Breakfast Nook Of My Dreams (My Friend’s Makeover I’m Jealous Of…)

Apparently pink rooms are having a moment over here (my guest room, my brother’s guest room) and while technically this room was painted before I took over decorating I will happily take credit for how pretty it is. Nicole and Curtis, two of our best friends, chose Dead Salmon by Farrow & Ball for this super classic and beautiful dining nook. This room is so beautiful and was frankly pretty easy to furnish and decorate because they had a great start with that color, light fixture, and the black shelving. This was the room before. The windows are just as beautiful but those brown walls and ceiling really weren’t their style. It just wasn’t living to its full potential but I feel pretty confident in saying that now it is… See?! Ok, let’s get into some of the main pieces. The shape of the window lent itself to a large round pedestal table, but I didn’t want it to be white which was harder to find than predicted. I found this table randomly on Frontgate, and it’s 60″ with a pretty dark marble top and a lovely traditional base. There are a lot of trendier post-modern pedestal tables out there, and certainly mid-century styles but they didn’t feel right here (plus, we wanted to use these more modern chairs) so I love how the base is so classic and traditional. The chairs are from Soho Home and the color is perfect (it talks to the green in the more formal dining room) and the cut-out in the back is a really lovely detail. Because this room is small and pretty simple, design-wise, we decided to set the table to add some styling elements. I really love that vase (with green interiors) and used Crate & Barrel plates with Anthro bowls and World Market glasses to deck it out. See how the two (well, three) spaces talk to each other? All have their own personalities but are definitely a part of the same family. Nic and Curtis had this black shelf/cart already along this wall which totally works but we recently talked about adding more pantry space to the nearby kitchen (which they desperately need) and bringing in two deVOL-style cupboards here. I like this vignette, but I think a prettier piece with closed storage would work better. The photo art is one they’ve had for a long time which reminds them of when their girls were little on skateboards:) I mostly edited and curated what they already had there, making it look better (which is my favorite thing to do), and added that pretty footed bowl, and a live jasmine plant which we all became obsessed with. The chandelier is so perfect in here – it holds the space so well, but it’s reflective and airy (not visually heavy) which keeps the room balanced. I will never tire of this room and the only thing better than looking at the photos is being in here in person. Thanks, Nic and Curtis for making my job so easy. xx And as a reminder, here’s a pretty great before and after:)

The Expertly-Planned River House Primary Closet Reveal

My brother (and SIL’s closet) technically isn’t my design but once I saw it all done by the incredible team at California Closets I was so excited to style and shoot it with my team. I’ve been so happy with our closet (also by CC) and while it’s certainly a luxury full-service situation, you get exactly what you want at the end with the final design solution being so functional and customizable. Have a lot of gowns and jewelry? They know how to maximize that. Do you have mostly utilitarian boots, jeans, and fleeces? They got you. It’s such a fun exercise to go through – to really list what you have and even more importantly what you wear frequently. Ken and Katie worked with Amy Bodi of California Closets – I was sooo happy with Amy’s design of my closet so I knew they were in good hands with California Closets’ Oregon team. One of the first steps Amy does is talk through their lifestyle, AKA – what their real needs are for clothes storage. Ken and Katie (like most PNW folks) are very casual, and neither of them have typical office jobs that require multiple wardrobes. Of course, you want to design it for universal functionality in case someone does have a lot of gowns, they will be able to store them. But for the most part, Amy took the information and designed the closet to meet their needs. She sent through all the drawings where you can see clearly where the jeans could be folded and stacked, where the blouses could be hung, or where the full-length dresses would live. She might have even done the same exercise with them where I counted out roughly how many sneakers vs. boots vs. tall boots vs. heels and designed the shoe racks to make sure that there weren’t any major holes (I even have a place for my tall boots but this lady – and her husband – love some thigh highs, LOL). The customization and thought-through custom design approach is what you are paying for (well, that along with the incredible installation service – this closet took under 2 days!). Here are some shots of it without clothes in it so you can see the general layout, materials, and how they match up with the design plans. Ken and Katie chose black stained wood, with white faux leather handles, and brushed brass accents. They added a few bells and whistles you’ll see below and decided against adding extra cabinet fronts for easy access (the closet has pocket doors on both sides and can be shut off easily. They opted for a lot of drawers and shelves for jeans, and the hanging space is pretty flexible for hers or his (and some but not too many spots for long dresses or suits). We couldn’t believe that this went from blank to totally done in 2 days. Their crew are absolute pros. This is because they have their own designers and installers instead of using subcontractors, meaning they know this product. That ensures the quality is always extremely high. Before we get into the beautiful photos, here’s a little video walkthrough! (just wait for the ad to play:)) The finished product, as you can see turned out so easy to manage and keep organized, met all of their needs (and more) and I actually had to bring in a bunch of my clothes to help fill it, LOL. While Ken and Katie aren’t huge fashion folk they know that a house of this size and budget needs a really thoughtfully designed closet for future owners, so they still went for it. As you can see it’s a pass-through closet between the hallway and their bathroom (I love a closet very close to a bathroom if you can lay it out that way). Amy and the California Closet team designed it so that the drawers and shelves are on one side, all the hanging on the opposite, and miscellaneous or seasonal shelving with bins up top. The opposite view shows their Maddox wall organizer which is great for setting out clothes, or more realistically, steaming them or hanging belts and robes. The finishes are all very high quality and coordinated. It’s a nice detail that puts the simple hook to shame. California Closets did such a great job of allocating each shelf for different things (and please note the mirror that is tucked away by the dresses – you’ll see it down below. The closet rods are wrapped in faux leather which is such a nice high-end detail (and makes it so easy to slide hangers). Ken and Katie went with only one full-length hanging rod, the rest for blouses, jackets, or pants. Above, we bought bins for seasonal items (or things like Spanx, slips, and specialty clothes). Secret Accessories FTW Two things that Katie and Ken went with are the pull-out hamper and again, a mirror that slides out and pivots – GENIUS. You could obviously use the hamper for laundry of course (it slips out easily), but they use it for dry cleaning. I think one of the biggest benefits of California Closets is the drawer customization (which is harder to get off the shelf, obviously – ha, pun intended). It precludes the need for a dresser in your bedroom – underwear, bras, socks all the annoying little stuff can have designated areas as well as T-shirts, athleisure, etc. For Katie, we styled sweaters, sweatshirts, and shoes on the shelves, but could easily have put jeans if you didn’t want to hang them up. When it comes to shoes, California Closets has a lot of different suggestions (for instance, Brian and I aren’t big shoe people so we did some pull-out drawer shelves and taller cabinets for my tall boots). For Katie and Ken, they wanted flexibility with the shelves so they selected shoe shelves on top (for heels or more occasional shoes) and we styled the rest of the shelves with everyday shoes, but those could easily be for stacks of anything, or baskets full of scarves, etc. The leather and brass detail make it look so high-end and luxe. There are a lot of different options (or you can use your own like we did for our closet). Quite possibly the best perk of this are these jewelry pullouts (that are lit with special lights). Listen, in case you are a robber you should know that these are all either my jewelry or props we bought for the shoot, but if you have fine jewelry this is such a lovely way to keep them organized, not to mention visually pleasing. A huge thanks to California Closets for designing and partnering on my brother’s closet. It’s a total luxury because you get it all totally customized for your needs and installed by professionals. If it’s in your budget for even a simple design solution it’s pretty darn incredible. Thanks, Amy Bodi for helping my brother and SIL – they are extremely happy:)

Softened Water and Me – a love story.

When we bought this house last year, we (ahem … I) chose live brass finish faucets because I was desperate for that beautiful 100-year-old perfect patina. When I asked a salesperson at a high-end plumbing showroom here in LA how he felt about my choice, he said ‘I love them…. because you’ll be back here in 7 years to replace them’. Cool. The order had been placed for weeks and there was no going back. Besides, we had a 100-year-old house and I wanted that patina!! So I asked him what I needed to do to save them and he said very quickly and clearly ‘soften your water’. I mentioned it to you guys and many of you recommended Culligan. I hopped online, scheduled an appointment and basically forbade anyone from bathing until I had set up a meeting. I learned the benefits of their softened and filtered water and wrote the check thinking it was another way homeowners have to spend money without any visual ROI. I ended up going for the Culligan Whole Home system which was around 3k but they do have quite a few different systems that can work for any need or budget. And, after a year living with that water and knowing what the benefits have been, I can honestly say that we are SO HAPPY that we did. AD So when they reached out about working together a few months ago I was like ‘I already have you!!’. It’s a weird brand alignment, I realize, but at the same time not at all. I know I’m not the only homeowner who is wondering if treating the water everywhere in your home is actually worth it. I happily said yes because I knew it was something that you as a reader might not consider at first but is something that can make a long-term difference in your home. Also when I was debating it there weren’t a lot of resources that talk about process, benefits, cost and why ‘water’ is something you should spend money on, so I felt I could give valuable information. Emily Henderson Culligan Water Softner Benefits 11 To begin, the benefits of soft and filtered water reach far beyond just the water that you and your family drink every day. You might think ‘wait, I already have filtered water’ but having soft water is different than the ‘filtered’ water you are drinking. Without getting too technical or scientific, water softener systems are designed to remove minerals that can leave deposits on dishes and plumbing fixtures from all your faucets while water filtration systems are designed to remove contaminants and foul odors that might be in your drinking water. So although filtered water is great and delicious and something your family should enjoy the benefits of, soft water goes beyond just what you drink every day and contributes to the longevity of your plumbing, faucets, fixtures and just about anything else that water touches in your house (including your body and skin). To be clear Culligan does both – softens for all the pipes and filters for any drinking water. Emily Henderson Culligan Water Softner Benefits 17 Culligan’s High-Efficiency Water Softening System (which is what we have installed in our home) is a unit that typically is installed in your garage, basement or utility space. It’s not huge – about half the size of old hot water tanks. It basically softens all the water at the direct source and then distributes it to your house once it has gone through the system. Ours goes off at around 3am (if I’m up I can hear a slight hum and I’m like – that water softener is doing its job) and a service person comes and refills the tank (based on the level of the hardness of your water) with salt which is needed to soften the water… They know where it is and they have the code to the garage so I don’t have to make an appointment or anything. Culligan 8462 For drinking water there is another system under your sink that filters the water and let me tell you, the filtered water that comes out of both the fridge and the water faucet is the cleanest most delicious water I’ve ever drank. I’m that person who gives glasses of filtered water to my guests with a ‘eh?, eh?’ look on my face, just waiting for them to say ‘My God, woman, your water is delicious‘. And I think to myself… I know. It really is. Yes, the water you drink is important not just in the way it tastes, but also to make sure it is free of any contaminants that might be in your water. I don’t want to dive into any fear marketing here and tell you what might be in your water, but when we tested it at our own home I wasn’t psyched. Normal fridge filtration systems don’t filter out harmful contaminants that might be in your water. Our filtered water comes out of that small faucet and comes through the fridge. Even the ice is clear not white, which is at first so beautiful and strange, then you get used to it and when I see really white ice it’s jarring. On to the reason that my housekeeper knows that I’m insane. Not only did I choose real marble, but yes, live brass faucets, as aforementioned. No brasso on these suckers. We have to use a special cleaner and a wax imported from Belgium… Emily Henderson Culligan Water Softner Benefits 15 Now live brass faucets aren’t for anyone nor would I put them in every one of my houses, (we aren’t in the mountain house) but goodness gracious if you can keep them up they are gorgeous, but the catch, hard water will absolutely ruin them. If you want to see an example go to George’s plumbing in Pasadena where you can see everything in person and they have examples of what live finishes could erode to if you don’t take care of them (I’m assuming that there were enough complaints so they are super upfront about the risks, with even visual props). Typically, “hard water” means minerals, such as calcium and magnesium in your water that can add to tarnish build-up on your faucets, which can then create rust in your pipes, and a green residue on your faucets among other things. It’s definitely not a “patina” you want. The beauty of a live finish is that it will wear and age with time and gain a patina on it, which is why you will see little spots here and there and imperfections that make it look like it has been there for years, vs something that will always be a bright and polished brass. But there is a fine line between that 100-year-old English look, and disgusting dark green rust. It can work in a super old house, but it is high maintenance, folks. Emily Henderson Culligan Water Softner Benefits 16 The soft water also means less hard water spots on our dishes, glasses, silverware or countertops, which if you’ve lived in a house with hard water before you know how annoying those spots can be when they show up on everything. It also helps to prolong the life of your appliances by 30% (according to the American Water Works Foundation) filtering out the minerals that cause excessive wear and tear, which means your dishwashers won’t get a film or backup in them which can cause them to break down and need repair more frequently. Emily Henderson Culligan Water Softner Benefits 2 Soft water also means softer clothes for you and yours. Hard water can eat away at clothing fibers so once your water is softened your clothes will feel softer and last longer (plus it’s better for your washer). Emily Henderson Culligan Water Softner Benefits 3 In our bathrooms, the benefits of soft water are visible as well. It’s really the gift that keeps on … flowing. The soft water helps prevent hard water spots on our shower which means less cleaning and scrubbing to keep them looking good, and also better when we shower, bathe or wash our hands. Emily Henderson Culligan Water Softner Benefits 6 Any time saved in scrubbing this shower of hard water spots and minerals on the tiles and floors from the water is well worth the investment to me. Emily Henderson Culligan Water Softner Benefits 7 Soft water keeps your hair and skin so much softer as well, by helping to remove all the minerals that can dry it out or irritate it. Ever switch from facewash to facewash wondering why your skin is constantly feeling dry and rough? Well, it may not be the facewash and instead might be the water that you are splashing on your mug. All of this is said not to scare you from your current water situation but to only enlighten and educate you on the benefits that softer and filtered water can bring to you, your kiddos and your home (pipes and appliances). Emily Henderson Culligan Water Softner Benefits 10 I’ve never had treated water before and while it wasn’t something that I thought we needed when we bought our home, having filtered drinking water and softened water going through all our pipes, faucets and appliances has been a very good thing. Culligan 8293 Culligan handles everything from start to finish with the first consultation as well as the final install and they are there to help answer any questions, worries or concerns you have. The costs will differ from home to home, but as I said above, Culligan Water can design the right system to fit any household budget. If hard water is damaging your appliances and faucets then replacing them can be very expensive. Besides, they also offer a 100% Satisfaction Guarantee within thirty days of purchase. If you decide the system isn’t right for you they will come out and uninstall it and refund you completely. They handle everything from start to finish and Culligan offers salt delivery programs to ensure your softener never runs out of salt and keeps everything functioning at peak performance. So that’s my ‘water’ love story. I’m happy to answer any questions or ask them if I don’t know it all (which I don’t). Where you live will dictate the right solution for your home and if you are renting and can’t have an installed water treatment system they do have a bottled water delivery service (which is what we did for drinking water prior to this house). But if you are investing in your house, with say special faucets, all new plumbing and new appliances then the benefits are worth it. Besides, for some of us who LOVE fresh, filtered drinking water and want to brag to our friends that we have the most delicious water in the world, it’s worth it. Here’s a little video we put together about the process and our very own Culligan system.
