I tend to spend the entire day on the go when I’m traveling. I just got back from a month in Madrid, and basically every day’s itinerary went something like: museum, cathedral, shopping, and copious amounts of walking. When spending almost the whole day out and about, I like to make sure I have everything I could possibly need with me, so I turned to this surprisingly spacious Uniqlo bag. While the bag can fit a lot inside, it folds flat for storage when not in use. It took up next to no room in my carry-on suitcase for the flights to and from Spain. How Early Should You Get to the Airport Before a Flight? Travel Experts Settle the Debate

How early should we get to the airport? It's a hotly debated question in nearly every household. There are the people who want to get to the gate four hours before the plane even pulls up, and then there are those who would rather walk straight onto the plane as everyone boards without breaking their stride. For whatever reason, these two people typically end up dating. So, if this is a frequent point of vacation contention in your home, you're not alone. "Travel is deeply personal," says Michael Holtz, CEO and founder of SmartFlyer. "Some thrive on efficiency down to the minute, while others seek the comfort of extra time." We turned to a few travel experts to find out what time you really need to arrive at the airport. Read on to see if you agree with their assessment. Factors to Consider There are a whole lot of variables when it comes to answering this question like seasonality, time of day, and whether or not you're checking luggage, to name a few. There's the factor of loyalty programs like CLEAR, TSA PreCheck, or Global Entry, which can drastically decrease your wait time. Oh, and it also depends on your airport, since some are more efficient than others (as most of us have unfortunately noticed). When to Arrive Much like you and your family members, our experts also had varied thoughts on exact timing. Holtz recommends the shortest amount of time out of the three. He believes that if you're a solo traveller with carry-on luggage and a loyalty program membership, you'll need the least amount of time, about 75 minutes. This is using the math that boarding typically begins 30-50 minutes before a flight, and with the fast-track status, it will take you 20 minutes to get through security and another 20 minutes to reach your gate. "That said, ease and efficiency vary by airport—and by traveler. When in doubt, cushion your schedule; peace of mind is always worth arriving a touch early," he says. Tori Simokov, founder of the Window Seat newsletter, recommends 90 minutes. "For domestic flights, I’ve found that’s the sweet spot—it gives me enough time to check in, clear security, grab a bite in the lounge, and get to my gate without rushing. It hasn’t failed me in ten years of flying." She likes to leave 30 minutes to get through security. Jesse Neugarten, founder of Dollar Flight Club, says that no matter the situation, you want to get to the airport at least two hours before boarding. "I usually add an extra 30-45 minutes for early morning or holiday flights because of airport traffic, security lines, and unexpected delays," he says. If you're flying out of a larger airport (think JFK or LAX) or using a budget airline that has fewer TSA lanes, you'll want to add time for that too. "One trick I swear by is checking real-time TSA wait times using apps like MyTSA or your airport’s website," he says. It turns out, even the experts didn't totally agree on the amount of time you'd need. So, in short: it depends. "A frequent traveler with TSA PreCheck or Clear might consistently breeze through security and feel comfortable arriving later, while an occasional traveler may prefer more buffer time due to anxiety or unfamiliarity," Neugarten says. "Past experiences (good or bad) also shape one’s level of caution when planning airport arrival times," Domestic vs. International Flights The general rule of thumb has always been that if you're flying out of the country, you want to give yourself a little more time. Neugarten agrees and recommends three hours for an international flight. While Holtz suggests cushioning your time by adding only 20-30 minutes more for international flights, he agrees that more time is needed. "International departures originate from larger terminals and require additional passport control at both security and boarding," he says. Simokov notes that you also need to consider checked baggage cutoffs. "Most domestic flights have a 40-45 minute baggage cut-off, while international flights typically require you to check bags 60-90 minutes before departure," she says. "It’s crucial to know that window before you arrive, because even if you get to the counter in time, the system won’t allow your bag to be checked once that cut-off hits.

This Is How Often You Should Really Deadhead Petunias for Healthier Blooms, According to Gardeners

Petunias are known for their vibrant, trumpet-shaped blooms and long flowering season, making them a staple in many home gardens. But to keep these colorful plants looking their best, regular maintenance is key, especially when it comes to deadheading. Removing spent flowers not only improves the plant’s appearance but also encourages more blooms throughout the season. So, how often do you really need to deadhead your petunias? We turned to gardening pros for the answer. Meet the Expert Julia Omelchenko is the resident botany expert at Plantum, a plant care and gardening app that helps identify plants and improve plant care. Kelly Funk is an experienced gardening expert and the President of Jackson & Perkins, an online plant nursery specializing in roses and other garden plants. Why Is Deadheading Important? When a plant’s flowers start to fade, it signals to the plant that it’s time to direct its energy into producing seeds. Deadheading disrupts this process and naturally extends the blooming season by removing the spent flower altogether, thereby redirecting the plant’s energy from seed production to producing more flowers. Not all flowering plants require deadheading, but many benefit from it, especially annuals like petunias. If you want your petunias to bloom all summer, deadheading is the way to do it. How Often Should You Deadhead Petunias? According to gardening pros, it’s best to deadhead petunias regularly to encourage more blooms and prevent them from going to seed. The frequency will vary slightly depending on your climate and the cultivar you have, but in general, you can expect to be deadheading your petunias at least once a week. “Ideally, petunias should be deadheaded at least once a week, but checking on them a few times a week is better, especially during peak bloom periods," says Kelly Funk, President of Jackson & Perkins. "I recommend making it part of your routine when watering or doing other tasks." Some petunia cultivars, such as Wave petunias and Supertunias, are bred to be self-cleaning, meaning they don’t require deadheading to encourage more blooms. Still, according to Julia Omelchenko, resident botany expert at Plantum, it’s best to prune these varieties occasionally to maintain their shape and stimulate vigorous growth. If deadheading your petunias multiple times a week sounds like a lot of work, we have good news for you: deadheading is super easy to do, and will only take you a couple of minutes to complete. The key is to ensure you’re doing it properly. How to Deadhead Petunias Deadheading involves removing the entire flower head once it starts to wilt. This includes the petals, the peduncle, and the receptacle. Basically, you want to remove the entire trumpet-shaped flower, including the green base that attaches it to the stem. This can be done by hand, or using sterilized scissors or pruning shears. “It’s important to deadhead properly by removing not just the petals but also the green base of the flower," Omelchenko says. "If you only pull off the petals, the plant will continue to produce seeds in the ovary." Additional Petunia Care Tips for Continuous Blooms Besides regular deadheading, there are a few other ways you can encourage your petunias to bloom all summer. Ensuring they have adequate light (full sun) and water (soil shouldn’t dry out completely) is the first step. Funk also recommends fertilizing your petunias every two weeks to help support vigorous growth. Finally, our experts say it’s common for petunias to start looking leggy by mid-summer, even if you’re deadheading regularly. To facilitate bushy growth, they recommend a light pruning to help tidy the plant. Not only will you be rewarded with fresh, compact growth, but you’ll also get a flush of new blooms.

Trend or Timeless? This Classic Pattern Is Everywhere Right Now (Dot, Dot, Dot)

There I was innocently shopping with one of my best friends and I spotted a polka dot mini skirt that my heart was telling me to try on. But “heart,” my brain said, “We don’t really wear polka dots. It’s not our style.” To that, my heart said, “Hush, let me try something new!” And try I did. Actually, my friend tried on that very same skirt and we both walked out of the store with new matching polka skirts. Since then polka dots have been everywhere I look, from Old Navy to Sezane to Hanifa. Polka dots are obviously not new in any way, a true classic if you will, but this version, a potentially fresh version where the dots are bigger and bolder has me veeeeeery interested in a way I’ve never been. So yes, this polka dot resurgence trend isn’t the tiny dots of yore. They are larger and tend to be more spaced out. Even the celebs are out here all dotted up (don’t worry that incredible chic set Jackie Tohn is wearing is below:))! There truly are so many incredible and cool options online that it was extremely hard to make cuts. I might even consider grabbing another piece for myself. So whether you have loved polka dots since birth or like me are just warming up to the idea, I think there is really something for everyone here. Let’s take a look! I had to put Jackie’s outfit up first because it’s perfect. And what’s even better is that not only can you obviously wear them together for a bold but chic polka dot look, they are so fun as separates. Plus, Sezane’s quality is so so good. I really love the brown and cream mix because it feels so versatile for spring, summer, and fall! It was hard not to include all of Sezane’s new polka dot items but I had to put in this button-blouse (and a few more down below and you’ll see why:)). The slight puff sleeve, the adorable neckline, it’s just one of those versatile tops that can be a little dressy or dressed down more casually. Regardless you will look effortlessly put together. And see what I mean about these medium to large dot sizes. They feel fresher which is why I think I’m now all of a sudden more drawn to them. Now, this sleeveless black top is giving sexy but in a modest way. I have one of their tops with the same neckline and I love it. It’s simple and sophisticated. But adding in those big cream dots makes this top so fun (I love how cream is less of a contrast to bright white)! Another one you could put under a blazer or just wear with jeans. And speaking of sexy polka dot tops these two are right in that category. The cuts are modest but if you want to show a little skin that option is there for you. I love the angled hemline of the mesh top a lot and if you aren’t up for the bra look, I think a thin black tank top would totally work under this too. Now, the white puff sleeve cutie is very deceiving which is kinda what I love most about it. It looks very sweet and modest but you will be showing a little skin down the middle;) If you prefer the more classic black and white polka dot look, I LOVE these pants. Some of the sizes are sold out but this brand goes up to a 3x! I really like the size of the dots and how spread out they are. These make me want to continue my journey of being a “cool pants and top” person rather than a “cute top and jeans” person:) Both “people” are great but having fun pants, whether that be a cool print or a fun cut, has been such a blast. Like, what!? CHIC!!!!! I know this style of a two-piece set isn’t for everyone but I do want to be her. Again, there’s a lot of negative space between the dots which I’m clearly a fan of, and the loose, easy breezy vibe/fit also makes the polka dots feel different. I guess I’ve always associated polka dots with 1950s (?) style which is so cute but has never been my personal style. So to see them in styles that are more current is also why I think I’m coming around to them more. Sezane? Why, of course! This is a beautiful but playful jumpsuit that again, could be dressed up or down! The draping effect they did on the bust is so cool and it’s just such a cool look. Below is the beautiful model, Jennifer Atilémile, in this jumpsuit so you can see it in action: Now let’s talk skirts, shall we? Both of these are wonderful but have some differences. The skirt on the left has those bigger dots (my fav), is a little less full, and has that sweet button detail on the side. It’s also $168. The skirt on the right is a little fuller, has pockets, is high-waisted, and is only $40. Both great! This one is of course extra fun because it’s blue! The dots are bigger but closer together which makes it visually a little busier but also so fun! And not for nothing, J. Crew’s site is 40% off right now and this best-selling skirt is included… Well, I can’t be stopped. These are both Sezane and make me want to walk around Paris popping in and out of cafes. I don’t think I have to say much because the photos speak for themselves. But what I will say is this may need to be a polka dot Easter with all of these cute options! And we haven’t even talked about the dresses yet. I mean, if these two dresses don’t scream Easter or just springtime in general I don’t know what does. The dress on the left not only has the prettiest cut but it’s J. Crew so this puppy is over $50 off! Then that linen shirt dress might be one of the most joyful dresses (casual category) I’ve seen in a minute. That blue is stunning, the large dots are awesome, and all of the other details are so pretty. It doesn’t come in other colors but this is the only polka dot option. Oh, and it’s a Boden dress which I know so many of you love:) And because we love Boden too, look at this jumpsuit! Again, the color is the best and the contrast belt + neckline somehow makes it better. I think it would be very difficult to have a bad day if you were wearing this. Ok. This one isn’t your average polka dot dress and my god is it something special. It’s from a brand called Hanifa and if you are looking for A LOOK that’s beautifully made look no further. I have a piece from them and it’s incredible. But this dress, in particular, is nothing short of a showstopper. For some polka dots that lean a little more classic, the brown dress is so pretty, a bestseller, and has a slightly open back for a little surprise. The dress on the right is perfect for a spring wedding, right? It’s so fun, stretchy, and slightly colorful. You are also pretty covered with just those shoulders popping out to say hi. Oh, and both are under $150! Both of these beauts are super classic and elegant but also versatile for different occasions. These are a little more expensive than the last two but given the retailers, great quality. And you can’t tell from this photo but the black one has the CUTEST scalloped collar (?) along the neckline. You should absolutely go to the site to see it. And here we are at the end. For those who love a slip-type of dress, I love these two. The one on the right is a little dressier and the bra situation could be tricky but if you can believe it, it’s from OLD NAVY and is only $50! I was so impressed when I saw it on the site. The other option is definitely more expensive but it looks like you can easily wear it with a standard bra and looks like you could wear it more casually to like say brunch:) That’s it for me today! 4 Women Honestly Review Gel-X Manicures (+ 42 Nail Art Ideas We Actually Tried)

It’s been nine months since my first Gel-X manicure and let me tell you: I’m never going back. Dips? Acrylics? Extensions? Regular gel? NO MORE FOR ME, THANK YOU. So today, I wanted to share a little bit more about Gel-X (you know – what it is, how much it costs, how long it lasts, the pros/cons) buuuuut I also wanted to bring in a few familiar faces to share their opinions and experiences. (If you’re the type of person with the dexterity to paint your own nails, we’re also sharing 42 different shots of our actual manicures – maybe we can spark some of your creativity! And, if you’re like, “uh, nails aren’t for me,” there’s even a picture of a real-life horse in here! Why? You’ll find out! Anyway, something for everyone!) Let’s start with the high-level overview, yeah? Basically, Gel-X is a press-on nail that cures like gel (read: your nail technician will size up your hands, glue on a nail of your preferred shape/length, and your ~new nails~ will be firmly attached for about a month after you shove your hand under one of those UV lights). Once everything has cured, your technician will proceed as normal – polish, art, lotion, oil, an occasional full hand model photoshoot for their IG, etc. – and when you’re finally ready to come back in a few weeks to switch things up, the removal process is the same as it would be for any standard gel manicure. i’ll pop in later with more of my nail art, but here’s a taste! Gel-X nails are flexible (so they won’t snap in half when you jam your hand into a wall, or a counter, or your car, or some other place, as regular humans are wont to do). They’re also really lightweight, especially when compared to acrylics, and they look natural – or, uh, as natural as neon cow print nails can look, at least. More than anything, though, I’ve found that Gel-X nails just make me feel really, really, really great. There’s something kind of fun and visceral about clacking away on something, you know? But this isn’t just about me – three other EHD gals have hopped on the Gel-X train, so I wanted to grab their unbiased opinions, too. I’ll check in with you below (and I’ll spill the details on my average spend!), but first…let me throw it over to the queen of nail art, Veronica. Veronica When’d you start trying out Gel-X? My first Gel-X manicure was in June of 2021, because I wanted to do something special for my birthday, and since then it’s been a nice once-a-month self-care routine during the pandemic. :) Had you invested in nails or nail art before (e.g. gels, acrylics, press-ons, etc.)? Before Gel-X, I had gotten gel on my regular nails and tried press ons / glue ons, but those only averaged about 2 weeks max. Was there an adjustment period to Gel-X? Not really. Gel-X is better for your nails than acrylics, but your nails do thin still because of them being sanded down in the process. What’s your preferred shape and length? I go back and forth between getting somewhere between an almond and stiletto shape and a square shape. I usually keep them short-medium length because of my job (photographer who works on her computer most days, or is dealing with equipment when I’m on set). How long do your appointments take? Appointments take between 1.5 – 2 hours. How long do your nails stay on? I’ve never had a nail fall off when getting Gel-X, and I usually get mine done anywhere between three and four weeks because my nails grow out pretty quickly. How do your nails feel? My nails feel good, not like they are being ruined or anything, but they are thinner for sure since starting Gel-X! Although, my nails have always been on the thin side. Is there an average cost? The place I go to is on the more expensive side (between $90-100 before tip) because I found a nail tech I really love and trust, but I know a salon that a pal of mine has gone to and it’s around $65 starting price. It really just depends on the salon, but I have found it’s important to go somewhere you feel the techs are able to take care of your nails in a healthy way. Where do you get your nail art inspiration? I use Pinterest and Instagram for nail inspo and have saved boards on both. Two accounts I follow on Instagram are: Nia Ho & Vivian W and the other saved posts have popped up on my explore page. :) Any pros and cons? I’m not a professional, so I can only speak to my personal opinion lol but pros – if you want something that will last without having to worry about chipping, breaking, or touch-ups, then the Gel-X is a great option. Cons – it can add up and get expensive depending on how often you get them done and it’s important to get them taken off in a salon so you don’t ruin your nails trying to do them yourself. Years and years ago I used to get acrylic nails but I hated it. More recently I was a press-on nail gal but only for special occasions. Was there an adjustment period to Gel-X? Oh yeah. At first, I felt like I couldn’t do anything with long nails but I got used to it pretty fast. Typing was very hard at first (I looked like this). What’s your preferred shape and length? I get the medium length and almond shape. How long do your appointments take? If I am getting a Gel-X removal plus a new set it usually takes an hour and a half. How long do your nails stay on? The longest I have gone between appointments is 4 weeks and they were still holding on! How do your nails feel? My actual nails feel a lot stronger than they did when I used to get acrylics. I think the Gel-X is a lot more gentle on your actual nails. Is there an average cost? With tip it’s between $100-150 (when you do designs versus a solid color it’s closer to $150). Where do you get your nail art inspiration? Instagram or my friends! Any pros and cons? Pros: I feel put together even when I am wearing sweats. And I get compliments all the time. :’) Cons: If the technician cuts my actual nails too short before putting the Gel X on as my nails start to grow out it can be painful because my nails start to grow into my nail bed (it’s gross I know). But the easy fix to this is to tell your nail tech not to cut your actual nails. Jess When’d you start trying out Gel-X? October 5, 2021 (my birthday:)). Had you invested in nails or nail art before (e.g. gels, acrylics, press-ons, etc.)? I went a couple of years getting gel manicures all the time when I worked in restaurants because it was the only kind that actually lasted. Getting a regular mani at the time was like throwing money directly into the trash. Then a few years ago I got a gel manicure with a design for the first time and my god I loved it but wasn’t able to afford it on the regular. This go around however was my first time EVER getting “fake nails”. My mom gave me a hard no when I wanted those french tip acrylics in middle school. I guess being like all the other cool girls wasn’t a good enough argument. Was there an adjustment period to Gel-X? Lol yes. I felt like Edward Scissorhands but less proficient for at least a week. I remember the next morning trying to put on my leggings thinking “I don’t think I can dress myself. This nail thing is a LIFESTYLE!” I was mainly afraid of them ripping off which is apparently a VERY normal experience for newbs like me. But then when I got my second and now with my third, they just feel like my normal fingernails. the 2nd set that felt too wide (they also were a little shorter to be fair) What’s your preferred shape and length? I love an almond shape and medium length. I don’t know if “medium” is a technical term but I want them to look longish and elegant but still want to be able to you know, type. I will also say that the physical gel-x shape is I think called Stiletto (not the tip shape but fact check me on that). Basically, I like the nail to look slender. The second set I got (the green one above) felt a little wide for me. Just something to think about if you are going in for the first time or if you want a different look. How long do your appointments take? Eh, 1.5 to 2 hours depending on the design. The first time is the shortest since they don’t have to remove your old set. How long do your nails stay on? So far about six weeks. BUT I have chosen designs where the “background” is clear or “natural”. Why that’s a good idea if you want to stretch out your mani is that the grow-out is less noticeable than if I had a solid color. How do your nails feel? Ok, so the plan is to have my real nails grow long enough to where I can just go back to gel manicures and they are almost there (except one stupid one that broke so not sure if I need to wait until that one grows back). That being said, you can see my real nails when I flip my hands over. It’s not the prettiest if I’m honest but I’ve got goals. So when you go, you have the choice to keep your natural nails long or cut them short so you really can’t see them ever. How do my real nails feel you ask? When the fake ones get shaved off, they feel oookay. Look, it’s a sacrifice. I don’t know if it’s possible to have perfectly healthy nails and do anything beyond a regular manicure. All I know is that for now, I love having my nails done and fun for six weeks at a time. I used to spend a bunch on standard gel manicures with full art – that’s the one beauty splurge that I really loved – but I had a really bad habit of picking it all off, which (a.) made my hands look kind of gnarly and (b.) was not great for the health of my nails. Was there an adjustment period to Gel-X? For me, no. I was used to having longer nails so other than the constant fear that they were going to pop off, they felt totally normal to me. What’s your preferred shape and length? I started with medium ovals, but I moved into long territory with the set you see above. Scale-wise, I think longer ones look best on my hands. How long do your appointments take? Removal can take 30-45 minutes and then my new manicure can be another 45 minutes to an hour, depending on how much detail I’m looking for. How long do your nails stay on? I maxed out at 8 weeks for the holidays – I literally had to cut them like my regular nails because they’d grown out so much. That said, I did experience some lifting on the base of my pointer finger when I first started – this was remedied by bringing it up to my nail tech and I haven’t had any problems since! If you’re doing a lot of schlepping or manual work, I’d highly recommend flagging that before your first set. How do your nails feel? Good! While I don’t mean to suggest that Gel-X is making my nails stronger, they’re in WAY better shape than when I used to get gel manicures sanded off every two weeks. When my sets are removed, my nails look pretty normal, too – no breakage or thinning is happening underneath the Gel-X nail. Is there an average cost? I pay a $20 booking fee to reserve my spot and then manicures are $60-100, depending on how crazy I’m getting. Tips are always 20-25% – so basically $100 on the low end, $150 on the high end. Where do you get your nail art inspiration? NIA!!! My nail tech is LA’s best-kept secret and while I kind of don’t want to share the intel (it’s already hard to get an appointment – she’s popular!!!), YOU MUST CHECK OUT HER INSTAGRAM. I do not know how Nia does not have a million followers – she can do ANYTHING. Seriously, her IG page is filled with a staggering variety and you’re guaranteed to find something inspiring there. SHE IS THE BEST. (I wouldn’t want to spend ~2 hours with anyone else.) as promised – this is doolittle, a big sweet dummy who loves to eat bananas, and these are my thanksgiving nails after a month of growth! Any pros and cons? Pros: I feel really powerful and kind of intimidating when my nails are done. Shampooing my scalp feels like a dream. If I’m going to spend at least 8 hours a day typing, it cheers me up to see a little party going on at the tips of my fingers. Clinking my nails on glasses makes me feel really happy. Cons: COST. I mean, when I break it down, I do think they bring me at least $3 of joy per day…but it’s not an essential and if things ever went south, I’m totally aware that this would be the first item cut from my budget. I don’t love subjecting my hands to such isolated UV rays once a month and sometimes I forget SPF before my appointments. Picking up coins is challenging. Working lobster clasps on jewelry is impossible. Nia’s studio is walking distance from my apartment and I get catcalled by a lot of creeps on my way to get my nails done.
