I Did It! I Finally Chose Fabric For The Farmhouse Kitchen Cafe Curtains…We’ve Gone Patterned

This is a real Deja Vu post for a lot of you. YES, last year at this time I did a post about how I want cafe curtains in my kitchen and then did nothing about it. You see I really only want/need them during the winter when it’s so dark outside and at the time I didn’t have the time to think/shop for the right patterned fabric. But the longer we live here the more I really really want to have these curtains AND add pleated fabric patterned shades on all our sconces (stay tuned on that one). And I finally realized the type of fabric I wanted was a small print on a relatively thin fabric and I couldn’t find this in store at all.

So I started shopping for block print fabrics, mostly from India since that’s where the artisans typically specialize in this. They all sell via Etsy so I started ordering sample after sample.

But the problem with these is that there are thousands to choose from AND you can select what type of fabric you want – i.e. cotton, pure white linen, off-white linen, thick linen, Duck fabric, etc. And each color of “stamp’ on the fabric looks different depending on the base fabric. So therefore this has taken forever (months) to order all the options I want.

A lot of the samples had to be made and many only came in as small as a yard. So many of them I love up close, but then as you stand back in the back of the living room they don’t read as well (either too dark or too polka dotty). I also don’t want them to be too thick as they need to give off that airy casual vibe (not a forma creased pleating – I’m not opposed to pleating, but I don’t want thick fabric and pleating look for this space).

I wanted to bring in some warmer tones since the island has a lot of red/purple in it and it’s definitely my “accent” color. But I also don’t want it to be too jarring as when you look at the space as a whole (kitchen, living, nook, entry) a more cohesive color palette will, I think, be more calming and harmonize better.

I also can NOT decide between a more white background or the flaxier fabric. The white is fresh and the color pops off of it nicely, but the flax looks good with the wood and is certainly more warm.

At one point (the day we were shooting this) we narrowed it down to these two fabrics, but when we hung them up neither felt right. From a distance, the one on the left was so dark (when you are in the kitchen it’s so cozy) and while I love that burgundy floral one it actually looks a little stripey with the repeat from a distance and I think I want something that is more fluid to offset the rectangles of the windows and the tile.

So where I’ve landed right now is we all (including Brian and the kids) love this blue-green floral pattern, where the flowers are staggered (not in a line). But I can NOT decide between a brighter white fabric (looks so good with the walls and pops against the windows in a happy way) or the natural linen (warm and more casual, but will it look just dingy?).

Sadly, I don’t have a professional shot to show you – I ordered the bright white sample after we shot this, but here is an iPhone shot of it. I fear that I’m drawn to the white more because I like crisp colors, but is it too high contrast?

Anyway, I SWEAR I’m on it this time. I love so many of these and I’m unsure if I’m going to DIY this or hire out. And I’m happy to say I think one of these will also be our pleated lampshade fabric (which we are going to DIY here since they are going to cost $115 EACH to do – and I have 9 of them, so…)

A fun process post for you today:) The holidays are nuts and even I get sick of looking at holiday stuff all December, so I hope you love a quick design update post :)

Should You Use Epsom Salt for Tomatoes? Experts Share the Dos and Don'ts

Epsom salt, chemically known as magnesium sulfate, is often touted as a beneficial supplement for tomato plants. The magnesium and sulfur found in Epsom salt are essential nutrients that support healthy plant growth and fruit development. However, opinions on its efficacy vary among gardening experts. Here's how and when to use Epsom salt to benefit your tomato plants. How Epsom Salt Benefits Tomatoes The general consensus is that, when used appropriately, Epsom salt can be beneficial, but it is not a cure-all solution for all tomato-growing issues. Used in the right ratio, it has been beneficial for palm trees and other plants that need a lot of magnesium. If your soil needs magnesium, then adding Epsom salts may be a helpful treatment. Of course, a proper soil assessment will be the final say on that, but if your tomato plants need some magnesium, here are ways Epsom salts can benefit them. Want more gardening tips? Sign up for our free gardening newsletter for our best-growing tips, troubleshooting hacks, and more! Improves Chlorophyll Production Magnesium is a crucial component of chlorophyll, the compound plants use in photosynthesis. By providing additional magnesium to your plants, Epsom salt can help prevent yellow leaves, leading to healthier, greener foliage and better overall plants. Enhances Nutrient Uptake Epsom salt can improve the plant's ability to absorb other essential nutrients from the soil, such as nitrogen and phosphorus. This enhanced nutrient uptake is particularly important during critical growth stages, such as flowering and fruit set, ensuring that tomato plants get the nutrients they need for robust growth and abundant fruit production. Prevents Blossom End Rot Unfortunately, there are mixed opinions about whether Epsom salt is an effective treatment for blossom end rot prevention. While some might call it a miracle treatment, some experts say it can do more harm than good. Tom Kalb, extension horticulturist at North Dakota State University wrote that Epsom salt doesn’t help prevent blossom end rot. Rather, it leads to more of it. “Blossom end rot is caused by a deficiency of calcium. Epsom salt contains magnesium sulfate—no calcium at all,” he wrote. “Adding Epsom salt to the soil may create more rot since magnesium and calcium ions compete for uptake into the plant.” David Austin, residential horticulture agent and master gardener coordinator in Highlands County, Florida, agrees. “Epsom salt will not increase plant growth better than other forms of available magnesium,” he wrote for the University of Florida's IFAS Extension. “Of course, if your plants are deficient in magnesium, they will grow more vigorously with its addition.” How to Use Epsom Salt on Your Tomato Plants If you decide that your soil needs magnesium and want to add Epsom salt to your tomato plants, here’s how you can do it. Before starting, gather the following supplies: Epsom salt, a measuring spoon, water, a watering can or spray bottle, and optionally, a soil test kit. Do a soil test: Conduct a soil test to check the magnesium levels in your soil. This will help determine if your soil actually needs additional magnesium. Dissolve Epsom salt: Mix one tablespoon of Epsom salt in a gallon of water. Stir until the salt is completely dissolved. Apply to soil: Water the tomato plants with the Epsom salt solution at the base of each plant. This method ensures the roots can absorb the nutrients effectively. Foliar spray: For faster absorption, you can also use a foliar spray. Fill a spray bottle with the Epsom salt solution and spray the leaves of the tomato plants. This method is particularly useful if you notice signs of magnesium deficiency in the foliage. Repeat as needed: Apply the Epsom salt solution every two to four weeks, depending on your soil test results and the specific needs of your tomato plants.

6 Things You Really Don't Need for a Short Trip—Plus, How to Pack More Efficiently

Packing for a short trip can be more challenging than packing for a long vacation. If you have a lot of activities planned for just a few days—packing light is crucial, especially if you don’t want to carry around heavy bags or pay those expensive luggage fees. While you probably know what you need to bring on your next weekend jaunt or business trip, knowing what you don’t need can help simplify the packing process even more. Here’s what you should never bring on a short trip. Adeela Hussain Johnson, president of BÈIS Valerie Batrice, vice president of consumer marketing at Travelpro Too Much of Anything Adeela Hussain Johnson, president of BÈIS, tells me packing too much of anything is a bad idea. “Packing light is key,” she says. Whether you’re taking a carry-on-sized bag or a weekender, start by accepting the fact that there is limited space and think logically from there. For example, it’s a smart idea to bring an extra dress shirt if you’re going on a business trip. But you probably don’t need to bring more than one bathing suit if you plan on swimming in the hotel pool. Clothing You Can’t Mix and Match Bringing items you can’t mix and match will only weigh your bag down. “Make sure you have mix-and-match options for your clothing, shoes, and bags so you can switch things up while maximizing space,” says Johnson. “Neutral bottoms work so well because then you can add your pop of color with shirts, which are smaller and easier to pack so you can bring a few extra." Lots of Toiletries If you have a ten-step skincare routine, you might need to par down slightly when you’re on the go. Johnson suggests using a BÉIS Dopp Kit for beauty and skincare products and limiting your selection to only what you can fit in that. “You can put your toiletries in the top section and your makeup below,” she says. In terms of cosmetics, try to bring multitaskers, such as foundation with sunscreen, or a hair product you can use for both de-frizzing and finishing. Handbags and Shoes That Aren’t Versatile Handbags and shoes can take up a lot of space and get heavy. While you might be tempted to pack those super-high heels for one night out, you’re better off opting for something more practical that you can wear for the entire trip. Keep color in mind, too. Black or tan shoes pretty much go with anything. The same goes for bags, explains Johnson. “Bags that can be versatile are perfect," she says. "The convertible weekender works so well because it’s the perfect size when packing for a short trip. When you arrive, you can unzip the bottom and leave that behind while the top of the bag converts into your day-to-day tote.” She also advises bringing along a crossbody or sling bag. “Crossbody or slings are so perfect for any kind of trip but, for a short trip, they can serve as the essentials bags for travel documents and your day-to-day carry bag," she says. "These bags also make a great snack carrier, as that’s always needed.” Full-Size Toiletries Valerie Batrice, vice president of consumer marketing at Travelpro, avoids packing full-size toiletries that she can purchase locally. "You can purchase trial-sized hygiene products once you arrive at your destination, which also allows you to try products that are made by local artisans," explains Batrice. By shopping locally, you can support small businesses and bring back travel-sized toiletry souvenirs from your trip. "During my trip to Portugal, I discovered the most amazing soaps and facial hydrating cream made with honey from France—a win, win!" Batrice says. One Outfit a Day Think less is more when it comes to your capsule wardrobe for a quick trip. "Avoid packing one outfit a day at all costs. Instead, follow the rule of three's: one pair of pants, one skirt, and one dress," explains Batrice. These clothing staples are easy ways to create lots of outfits without overflowing your suitcase. As an added bonus, this gives you extra room in your suitcase for you to shop during an international vacation. "This packing method leaves room in your luggage for souvenirs or new clothes if you decide to shop in a different country," says Batrice.

The 15 Cozy Sweaters We Found And Loved Under $75 (+ One That Has Been Sold Out For Years!)

It bears repeating that cozy season is the best season. There are wonderful things about all four of them but getting to slide on the first soft sweater of the season is pretty intoxicating. I know that for me, I am in need of a really great one but have no desire to spend over $100. So today is a little round-up of my findings. They are all under $75 (most of them around half of that) but maybe the most exciting news is that a fan favorite of one of Emily’s is back in stock and on a very good sale!! Ok, let’s jump right on in:) Cozy Knit Button-Down Cardigan – $28 While the model is very cute in this sweater, personally I think Emily really sells it in her photo. She wanted it oversized so got an XL which I really love the look of! I could easily cozy up in it on my couch or throw it on with a fun pair of jeans. Either way, I’m going to be warm and very comfortable. Oh, and it also comes in 5 other colors! My Only Sunshine Sweater – $54 It’s BACK IN STOCK BABY!! Every time we post a photo of Emily in this sweater we get asked for the link. Unfortunately, it’s been very hard to track down until now. Macy’s to the rescue! They have it in stock in all 4 colors plus they are 50% off. Insane and I’m actually going to add to cart as soon as I’m done writing this post. It’s slightly cropped which I love and those cuff and neck proportions are so good. Also, Emily’s stamp of approval holds a lot of weight to me and she loves hers. Oversized Split-Hem Mockneck Sweater – $39 Currently, this cutie is on sale for $39 (normally $80 so another 50% saving). I think this just looks so chic. That turtleneck is very sleek but the rest of the body looks like it hangs so beautifully with a wonderful amount of roominess. A perfect “oversized but cool” vibe. Now, I’m partial to the brown but it also comes in 5 other colors (some stripe, some solid). V-Neck Cotton Cardigan – $30 This one gave me Alex Mill vibes, an EHD favorite brand, but at a much lower price point. I would likey size up in this too because as I said I love that look. But also, how good is this denim-y blue? It also comes in an olive green that’s equally as awesome. SoSoft Crop Cable-Knit Sweater – $30 You’re never going to not love a cable knit sweater. It’s such a classic! This one is $30 on sale (normally $50) so a great price BUT the “so soft” name is apparently very true based on the reviews I read. They all say how amazingly soft it is which means it’s super cozy…and ideal for the colder seasons. Count me in! I might size up for a more slouchy look on this one too but it’s up to preference:) It also comes in 3 other colors and sizes up to 4x! Polo Sweater – $30 As a gal who lives in LA, we don’t often need super heavy sweaters (despite us dreaming of snowy mornings by the fire). So what I love about this one is that open collar. SO CUTE. This is a cool, casual style that could easily take you through late spring. The reviews also say it’s incredibly soft. Do with that information what you will:) There are 4 other colors, sizes up to 4x, and is also $30 on sale (normally $50). 100% Organic Cotton Boyfriend Crew Sweater – $50 Another very classic-looking sweater that not only comes in 10 other colors and is $50 but there are 3,665 5-star reviews! It’s 100% cotton and I would LOVE this a little oversized too:) Mock-Neck Crop Sweater – $30 The neck and the color are what really drew me to this one. It’s just so pretty! But if this blue isn’t what you like on you then you have 4 other color options (and sizing up to 4x). So for $30 on sale (normally $50), I think this is such a great buy. CashSoft Oversized V-Neck Sweater – $70 Clearly, I’m a sucker for a good neckline! The v-shape is pretty perfect and you know I love that it’s meant to be a little oversized. It’s a little pricier at $70 than most on this list but man does it look so cozy. This one also comes in 7 other colors! Stripe Colorblock Mock Neck Sweater – $40 I was really drawn to the fun color blocking of this one! It’s nice that it’s not your average sweater pattern but it’s not so bold or colorful that it’s overwhelming. It’s just cool and comes in two other colors:) AE Whoa So Soft V-Neck Sweater – $30 I love oversized sweaters but I also love a slight off-the-shoulder moment. Who says a cozy sweater can’t be a little sexy?? And while a soft pink isn’t a traditional fall/winter color I think it should be! But there are 5 other color options however, the sizing is a bit limited. I just had to add this one because I love the look of the fit, it’s $30, and the reviewers confirm it’s a “whoa” in the softness department. Cozy Cardigan Sweater – $27 How pretty is this color?! It’s the perfect green/gray. Festive but not in your face. It’s the main reason why I had to include it…aside from the fact that it also looks very cozy. Oh, and it’s currently $27 on sale ($45 normally), sizes up to 4x, and comes in 3 other colors/patterns. Cozy Crew-Neck Sweater – $24 Here is the crewneck version! This warm camel color is stunning and the look is totally classic. You could easily dress this a little up for work, for a casual hang with friends, or pair it with your favorite sweats on the sofa. It’s $24 on sale ($40 normally), sizes up to 4x, and comes in 3 other awesome neutral colors. Cozy Knit Mock Turtleneck Pullover Sweater – $32 Another great stripe and another great neck! I think this one is just so cute. The black and cream make it feel a little extra cool and the price is so good at $32. There are 4 other colors and the sizing goes up to 4x! Women’s Sailor-Collar Zip-Front Sweater – $50 I had to include one zip up and this one might be perfect. The oversized collar is so awesome. It also comes in a dark moss green that’s so pretty. So for those not interested in buttons or pullovers, this one could be your match! That’s it for my research and whether you found something new or simply enjoyed the window shopping I hope you have a great rest of your Saturday (or whatever day you happen to read this on:)) See you tomorrow. Love you, mean it.

9 Cozy But Extremely Cute Throw-And-Go Jackets That Will Feel Like You’re Wearing A Blanket

Last week, we talked about the new fall jackets we are really eyeing for this fall…and a lot of them are variations of the very trendy (but also extremely classic) barn jacket. Our numbers show that y’all were big fans too! Due to the fall outerwear excitement, today we thought we’d get a little more casual and a lot cozier:) I’d like to think that “coziness” is a part of our EHD ethos. We want to help you create a cozy home and show you comfortable/cozy options to potentially wear on your body (if that’s your preference, of course). So think of these jackets as elevated “throw-on-and-go” soft pieces. Perfect for random errands, school pickup, a fun friend lunch, or any other outing you want to feel comfortable but a little extra cool. Let’s start with my muse! As I was searching all over the internet for fall jackets, I immediately LOVED this one when I saw it. But it really didn’t fit in the more traditional fall jacket category of last week’s post. I decided to pin for potentially a future roundup. Well, that opportunity came much fast than I thought since the other post was so popular. YAY. So for this one, I just love the ease of dressing it up or down. The way it’s styled with the vintage tee and jeans is so fun and fresh! But switch the jeans for wide leg slacks and the vintage tee for a silky top… it’s perfect for your business casual job. Done and done. Personally, I have been pretty obsessed with the bomber jacket look for a couple of years now so when I saw this sherpa blush pink version I shrieked! I adore that color, the look of collar and cuffs, plus that amazing nubby fabric is so cozy. Another great option that will work with a ton of looks. This gal is the “fanciest” on this list but it’s also easy breezy to dress down. I mean look how it’s styled in this photo. I want to be this cool girl! The lack of collar give it edge and how chic are those buttons? When I showed Gretchen this jacket she had the same reaction I did, “OMG I love this one so much!” The pattern of the sherpa fabric is such a fun and cool detail. Then you add that bold pop of blue and baby, we’ve got a cozy jacket star! It’s another one that just looks so cool and you wouldn’t need to do much else with your outfit. Instant statement piece. I also found this one early on in my search and thought about sending the link to Emily! It’s got her name written all over it. But since she likely has something similar, the next people I wanted to share it with was all of you:) The piping really elevated the whole look, I think that blue is perfect, and you can’t tell me that doesn’t look so freaking comfortable to wear. But if you want something a little more understated (and more affordable) this nubby quarter zip is perfect. This incredible, rich merlot color is so pretty and I love that little pop of bright red on the zipper pull for a fun contrast! If you want a little more length then this guy could be a great match for you. Think how warm you’ll be! This was one was Gretchen’s favs and she is highly considering buying it which always makes me feel good when I show the team my finds:) Plus, since it’s from Old Navy it’s currently on sale for under $50. But maybe you want something that feels a little more modern but still is in the cozy fleece world. Well, enter the neoWARM liner. The piping is amazing, love that there’s no collar, and that waist tie brings the whole look home. I can think of so many things to easily wear this too! It’s a no brainer. Last but not least is this Varley fleece (the same company of the quarter zip Em is wearing in the opening photo). Their quality is great but also look at all the details! That oversized collar is amazing (apparently I’m into a big collar or no collar), those double pockets are so good, and who doesn’t love longer fabric to keep that bum warm and dry. It just looks very “effortless” in the best way. Ok, that’s my little roundup that I literally couldn’t wait to show you but I hope this was helpful and that now everyone is fully ready for fall. Love you, mean it.
