How to Avoid 'Airplane Ear' So Your Ears Don't Pop on Your Next Flight

Image

It’s a feeling that air travelers know all too well: an uncomfortable, and sometimes painful, popping sensation that takes over your ears as your plane lifts into the sky or touches down on the tarmac. The condition is more commonly known as “airplane ear,” and according to the Mayo Clinic, it happens when the air pressure in your middle ear and the air pressure in the environment are out of balance. Symptoms of airplane ear can include ear pressure, a feeling of fullness in your ear, and muffled hearing. You’ve probably experienced it firsthand, but you might not know how to deal with it.

If you’re a frequent sufferer of airplane ear, try these expert tips before your next flight to keep the discomfort in check.

Nissim Khabie, MD, is a board-certified otolaryngologist at Ears, Nose and Throat Speciality Care of Minnesota.

Brian Taylor, AuD, is the senior director of audiology at Signia.

Who Experiences Airplane Ear?

“Everyone will react differently to pressure changes,” says Nissim Khabie, MD. Our ears pop when we experience a change in air pressure and our Eustachian tubes—which connect the middle ear to the back of the throat—can’t handle the change, according to Khabie.

Many people won’t experience any ear discomfort on a flight if their Eustachian tubes are working properly, says Brian Taylor, AuD, the senior director of audiology for Signia. If your Eustachian tube doesn’t work properly—like when you have a cold or suffer from Eustachian Tube Dysfunction—you can take a few preventative steps to ensure the pain and pressure is as minimal as possible.

How to Protect Your Ears While Flying

Consider Over-the-Counter Options

If you have a cold or allergies, Taylor suggests you take an over-the-counter decongestant pill about an hour before boarding. During flights longer than two hours, an over-the-counter nasal spray can be used about 20 minutes before takeoff and again about 30 minutes before landing. If your flight is shorter, Taylor says one dose should be enough.

“The pressure and pain are more pronounced on the descent, so it's important to have the nasal passages as clear as possible at that time,” he explains. If you have high blood pressure, exercise caution using these meds. It’s also important to take these steps if you’ve been sick recently.

Use Earplugs

For people who are generally susceptible to airplane ear, earplugs can be great tools. “Specific earplugs designed to help reduce the pressure in the ear canal reduce how quickly the pressure changes,” Khabie says. Thankfully, disposable earplugs are often sold over the counter.

Try Pressure Equalizing

Have you ever heard that yawning or chewing gum before takeoff and landing can reduce ear pain? Taylor explains that these simple behaviors can be all it takes to ward off airplane ear.

“For someone with normal Eustachian tube function, yawning, swallowing, or chewing gum might offer some relief during flight,” he says, emphasizing that it’s normal to experience a mild amount of pressure as the altitude changes.

However, if you have congestion, Taylor says these steps likely won’t be enough—that’s when you should consider over-the-counter interventions like nasal spray and decongestants. In addition to helpful behaviors and over-the-counter solutions, staying hydrated can help, too. Be sure to drink plenty of water while you wait at the gate, and keep it up on the flight.

Ask Your Doctor

For frequent fliers who struggle significantly with airplane ear even after trying the suggested precautions, Khabie said ear tubes can be an option. Ear tubes—tiny, hollow tubes usually made of plastic or metal that are inserted via a surgical procedure—allow air into the middle ear and prevent fluid from building up behind the eardrums, according to the Mayo Clinic.

“If ear pain and pressure linger after the flight more than about a week, consult your healthcare professional; sooner if the pain is severe,” Khabie says.

The 4 Active But CUTE Swimsuits I Bought To Play With My Kids On Spring Break (+ Our Favorite Past Swimsuit Posts)

It’s that special time of year (ha) – our tans aren’t on yet (well, they are for some of us LOL) and we usually aren’t as “ready” in all the ways we want to be, but alas swimsuit season is upon and we should feel great regardless. I mean it’s about to be warm and we can be outside as much as we want! Every year we do swimsuits post with different body sizes, preferences, price points, etc – but all driven by what we feel really good in because if you don’t, you won’t wear them. It’s not easy but when you have one you love it makes spring/summer life so much easier and is such a confidence boost. I have some new ones that I bought specifically for our Belize trip which was very, very active (think more spelunking and kayaking than cute beach outfits). So below you’ll find what I bought and wore for those purposes. I wore this rashguard suit no less than 6 times over the 10 days because the Caribbean sun was so hot on my fair flesh and reapplying sunscreen was its own full-time job (and not great for the water). And while the princess sleeves might be too cutesy for a lot of people, I’m telling you – this suit is FLATTERING. I had it in blue stripes (til I burst the zipper after wearing it 20 times) and in rainbow (which is admittedly a bit toddler-esque but I wore it during Pride month a lot). I don’t love the belt they sell with it, but if you are into belted suits that’s an add-on. So I just bought the red and love it. The other two styles had a bra shelf for support and this one didn’t, but I had already bought their matching red bikini top to go underneath it (shown in the photo). It’s a compression suit, meaning that it has 2-3 layers that hold you IN without being uncomfortable (I’m wearing a small). It is very smoothing and shows no little bumps and diminishes pouches if that’s of interest to you (it is for me). Yes, they are so expensive and I wish they weren’t. But I wore this suit snorkeling then to the pool then to lunch then to dinner, with swimshorts or those lightweight jean shorts – I lived in it. And I felt really cute and protected all day. 10/10 (but wish this one had the support shelf, TBD). OK. This is another magical suit from TA3 that frankly, makes your body look really hourglass-y (without the corset back). I wore this A LOT which Brian was thrilled about, LOL. I’m wearing a small and the bust is a bit small, but still fits (these TA3 suits are made for curvier gals to enhance and tuck, and boy do they work). If you have smaller love pillows you might not want this type of constriction nor will it be as figure-flattering. But for curvier ladies, it’s been game-changing. They also have long or short torso options. My only beef with this company is that I want less crazy bright colors. This comes in black which I’m going to buy as well after wearing and loving this one so much in Belize. Oh, and it’s a medium-rise in the leg which is so flattering and doesn’t cut in at all (but is a little bit cheeky in a good way). I would have shot it that way for this post but I had yet to get waxed before my trip, so… This one-piece is also a compression suit from Stylest and I love the square neck and the white stripes. I ended up wearing this one only once because I think I need to size up (this is a small) so I was spilling over the top a lot, and not in a good way. So I wish I had bought the medium instead (and still might). It also cuts in a bit around the thigh (low cut) but I think that’s due to being a bit too small. Ah, the famous Andie Malibu swimsuit. Five of my friends have this suit because it’s so easy to wear, comfortable, supportive (it has a shelf), and looks like a tank top so it is the best “around town on vacation” suit in case you should want to jump in (which we did). I wore this cave tubing, kayaking in the mangroves, and in town a bunch (as well as at the pool/beach). I would love a brighter blue version or stripes on it. It’s definitely my go-to in Portland for the hot tub, too. Where To Buy ALL The Best Swimsuits (Affordable, Black Owned, AND Size-Inclusive) – Because I’ve Been Heavily Insta-Marketed, Believe Me Not all of our swimsuit posts still have the suits available but we did a post about 27 different swimwear brands that you can shop from if you are looking for some new options! Another Swimsuit Review: This Time On 27 Different Women With Different Bodies & Swimwear Needs This post is one of those that likely a lot of the suits aren’t available but I wanted to include it in this post because we did a reader call out where we asked if anyone had any swimsuit recommendations. They would just need to take a photo of them in their suit, write a little blurb, and then I would of course pay them since I know how vulnerable it can be putting yourself on the internet in a swimsuit. But wow were we blown away by these beautiful women! If you want a feel-good post as we enter swimsuit season, this is a great one. Hope this was helpful on the swimsuit search journey this year.

Emily Buys The Team Her 3 Of Her All-Time Favorite Products To Try… And They Give Their Honest Reviews

Itry to not actually force other people to choose the products that I swear by – but every now and again, as we brainstorm posts based on our own grievances certain things come up. Once again we were discussing the frustration around comfortable and affordable underwear, beauty products, and tanning and I was like “CAN YOU NOT HEAR ME?? I HAVE THE SOLUTION THAT I’VE TOLD YOU ABOUT A MILLION TIMES!!!”. Now there are many things that I don’t have the answers for (best non-stick pan, really comfortable underwire bra for larger boobs, or good concealer). But when it comes to underwear, face masks, and tanning lotions I have tried so many, so I KNOW THE BEST. I think the hesitancy of my team to actually use these products was 1. maybe it’s just for you (me) and not for everyone’s body or skin and sure, that is definitely a good argument, and 2. they aren’t the cheapest on the market. So I begged them to let me buy them for them, put it on mommy’s card – virtually no risk!! So that’s today – my team honestly reviewing the products that I swear by. Jockey Underwear Em Explains Why They Are The Best: I DESPISE a bad pair of underwear – one that cuts in, feels super uncomfortable, and frankly makes me feel bad and sad with the line it creates. So when I found this pair (totally randomly) I want to never go back. I get so bummed when I can’t find one pair and will often hand wash one rather than wearing a backup. Where do I start – this fabric is stretchy enough so they stay in place, but they do NOT cut in – like even if I’m bloated or gain some fun “summer/beer” lbs, they are still so comfortable (it’s nice to not feel shamed by your panties). There isn’t a “band” or seam at the top or bottom in which to cut in. They are SO THIN and soft, but so far (after 5 months) are still in great shape and have held their shape. I can NOT feel they are there, at all – both the thong and the normal underwear. They don’t ride up, they stay put, and they are so soft that I’d even say they make me feel sexy – despite being so simple. Jess This actually might be the lightest and softest fabric I have put on my body. I completely get Emily’s obsession. I love that the tank top doesn’t scoop too low but I still feel kinda sexy in it. Then the hipster underwear truly doesn’t cut in at all, is a fuller coverage (my preference…especially for sleeping), but I feel really cute too! It really is such a “cute/secretly sexy in a not trying kinda way” set that I would happily (and will happily) wear to bed. I have already ordered more. O and I really really like the thong which is a pretty big deal for me. Historically, I hate thongs. But these are thin, seamless, and have just the right amount of fabric between the buns;) I think they sit a little higher than in the model photo but that might just be because of my body type. Rating: 10/10 Caitlin Rating: TMI time: I’m wearing underwear like…25% of the time, maybe? I have a butt that eats fabric like NOBODY’S business, I’m not super crazy about thongs, and I got really tired of being like “hey can you block me while I fix my wedgie in the middle of this store/park/public place?” so I just kinda stopped wearing it. All that said, HECK YEAH – these will 100% be my new period week underwear. I got the XL-2XL and kind of wish I had sized down because I had a bit of an issue with the waist band slipping down (though I can’t imagine myself wearing underwear that would also fit Mallory, hah), but I can imagine that I’ll LOVE that stretch/flexibility when I’m dying of cramps and just want my underwear to be pulled up to my boobs. (Anyone else just want to feel totally swaddled when they’re on their period?) I also really do love the fabric – it’s different from all the other silky/stretchy underwear I had – and after reading Jess’ note, I have to say that I totally agree that the top + bottom combo ARE very cute in the “I’m not trying, I’m just naturally put together” way. I paid $45 for 5 pairs + 2 tanks and think that was a super fair price – would recommend. AD Rating: 7/10 (but am I really qualified to judge? Unclear. I’m curious what you’d think about these!!) Mallory Everyone on the team keeps raving about these, and after trying them out I have A LOT to say. First let me start with this: Emily has never steered me wrong on a product recommendation, but Jockey is the one thing I just can’t get behind and for weirdly specific reasons a lot of people just won’t relate to. 1. I have a problem with seams. Always have, always will. Let me tell you what I mean by this…when I was a young girl (like 3 years old young) I would FREAK out if my socks were on the wrong way or if I was wearing 2 different unmatching socks where the seams felt different and didn’t perfectly align with the top of my foot. It’s a weird flaw, but everyone’s got their thing and this one’s mine. So when I tried on these “magical” jockey panties (we all hate that word btw) I noticed an unseeming seam riding horizontally across the butt (but like low on the butt, like where the crotch line meets the underwear in the back if that makes sense) and it just drove me insane. I also exclusively wear thongs because wearing regular underwear feels like a diaper to me – especially in pants (I KNOW ALL MY WEIRD QUIRKS ARE COMING OUT IN THIS POST AND IM SORRY YOU ALL HAVE TO WITNESS THIS). So, I tried the jockey thong also, and it’s nice, but I didn’t think it was anything super special (my team so disagrees with all of this btw). The fabric is really soft and nice, so they got a point in that department, but all in all, I didn’t freak out over it like everyone else did (and continues to do) when they first put them on. Also, the tank top is very soft, but if you have broad shoulders and a long torso (like me) the straps might feel a little short (Jess and Emily said they both didn’t have that issue at all). Rating: To Jockey, Emily, & the team: I’m sorry but this is a 2/10 (1 point for the soft fabric, 1 point for the stretchiness of the fabric) Em Explains Why It’s The Best: Like any mom/lady trying stupidly to chase youth, I’ve tried a lot of face masks. Almost all of them make me feel good, like I’m taking care of myself but very few do enough to make a visual change. I’ve been using this one, one or twice a month for probably 6 years. They call it the Hollywood’s 2-minute facial. It’s green and you can FEEL IT working (yes it kinda burns and buzzes). It is indeed intensive and not for all skin types – but listen, people say these types of intensive exfoliators aren’t for my skin type and yet every time I use it I glow, have far less visible fine lines and my skin is just tight and shiny for at least a day. I have thin skin so I need to be careful, but I also have dry skin so I have a lot to shlub off. There are many times where I’ve left it on for 15-20 minutes (NOT recommended) and it just WORKS. My kids, however, are very scared by it because it is bright green … Jess In fear of being disowned, I wasn’t as taken with this treatment as I thought I would be. Look, it felt totally good. I felt very clean and it smells so great. But I guess I thought I was going to be transformed in some way. A “new Jess” if you will which is my fault for thinking any product could do that. Perhaps though because I already have a pretty involved regiment and do a chemical exfoliation about once a week, that’s also why it didn’t feel like a “new face”. Had this been Jess in 2019 maybe it would have been a different experience since that girl did not have any kind of routine. Regardless, I loved trying it and will for sure keep using the bottle I have. AD Rating: 8/10 Caitlin Oh my, this threw me for a loop. I have super sensitive skin and maybe didn’t read the description – you’re only supposed to leave it on for a minute if you’re tender, like me – and was like “AM I DYING???” about 90 seconds in…but yeah, this thing works. I have super dry skin (and a nice little flaky patch on my right cheek! Cool!) so I usually use more abrasive cleansers to get everything all smoothed out and ready for moisturizer. This was my first-ever chemical exfoliant, so I was SHOCKED that this sloughed off all my dead skin and left a super-smooth canvas without me having to do any rubbing and scrubbing. My real test for exfoliating products is when I put on my tinted moisturizer afterwards – dry friends know the struggle of seeing little flakes start to pop up as soon as foundation goes on! – and this just left a nice, hydrated, baby-soft surface for me to work with. Good call, boss!!! Rating: 10/10 Mallory I’m not a skin guru, in fact, I find it difficult to wash my face every morning because I just forget about it (gross I know, I do my best). Because of that, I was reluctant to try another “holy grail” beauty product that sat in my medicine cabinet and MAYBE got used once a year. So, I apprehensively tried the ExfoliKate, which the bottle says is “Hollywood’s 2-minute facial” and I kinda liked that branding, so I tried to be a little more open-minded because I do live in Hollywood after all and I rarely spend the time or money on real facials, so this seemed more approachable to me. Immediate reaction was: Woah this stuff is GREEN, then I rubbed it on my freshly washed face (see I wash sometimes) and then started to rub it around in circles on my cheeks, chin, forehead & nose. Then something unexpected happened…IS THIS SUPPOSED TO BURN? I’m panicked and grab the back of the bottle to see if I should immediately rub this off my face and then I read “might cause skin tickling and light flushness” and I was like PHEW. Then it kinda turned into a good burn, dare I say, a light skin tickle. I waited the 2 minutes so I could get the full results out of my 2-minute Hollywood facial and then WOW. My skin felt like a baby’s butt. I was shook. I’m still shook. This thing actually works!! I will be using this more than once a year unlike my other face products (it recommends 1-2 times a week which seems manageable to me). Rating: 10/10 St. Tropez Self Tan Classic Bronzing Mousse Em Explains Why It’s The Best: I was called an albino in high school. I was asked if I was related to Powder. My level of pale is far beyond what you think it is, and while nothing is wrong with it, I’m really self-conscious about it. So I’ve been dabbling in the self-tanner front since the industry was first discovered in the ’90s. We joke that I’d rather be orange than pale, which is not something I’m proud of, but I think from years of being made fun of it’s just my thing. I also get sun rash if I’m in the sun and have zero melanin in which to tan, so there is no way of me doing this naturally. I know how beautiful naturally fair skin can be, but I prefer some tone and I think I look healthier with some help. That’s all to say, again, I’ve tried them all and every time I try something new I’m like “nope”, this is better. A bunch of you recommended the one Goop recommended because it doesn’t get on sheets and ladies. I tried it and sure it’s fine but maybe if you already have a tone to start with. I also like Coco and Eve but it can go way too orange on my skin. Very few products can take you from stark white to California tan in 8 hours. You HAVE to use the mitt to make it even and you have to rub evenly and a lot over your entire body to ensure an even color. And yes it will get on your sheets and while technically it washes off, after like 10 sessions on your sheets (even washing in between) you’ll see some staining. So if you want to avoid it just sleep in PJs or a nightgown. While I used to get a weekly spray tan, Covid and living in the mountains took that option away from me and I fell back in love with what I think is the best self-tanner on the market. It instantly makes me feel better, healthier, and yes even in the winter (especially in the winter, but I just don’t use as much). Listen, do I wish that the world and myself were not conditioned to loved tan skin more, YES, but if you are like me and are self-conscious about how see-through your skin is then at least there is a very easy solution. Jess I am now VERY into this self-tanner and despite Emily recommending it…forever, I was just too nervous that it would look bad or I would do it wrong (and actually my feet were ummm, not good in the morning but a shower and a little scrubbing fixed them right up). It was super easy to apply, comes out very even AND now my pale legs match my tan arms. I actually only applied it to my legs because I just needed to even out my body tone. My skin (especially my arms) typically tans pretty easily without “trying”. But my legs are another story. First off, I only just the past couple of months really started to wear shorts outside regularly so that’s strike one against my legs getting sun exposure. Strike two (and a healthy strike at that) is that I don’t want to lay out anymore. I want to go to the beach, I want to be in a pool, and I want to just generally be outside, but gone are the days I want to just sit and bake. So with this tanning mousse, my arms and legs can look like they belong to the same body without playing fire with skin cancer. THANK YOU EM!! Rating: 10/10!! Caitlin Like Em, I am VERY VERY pale. Unlike Em, I have a crippling addiction to the spray tan from Sugared & Bronzed (see if they have a chain near you – it’s SO good, once you get over the whole “standing naked in a freezing room in front of stranger” thing) because their color is beet-based, so it runs a little more “human skin” and a little less “tangerine.” I tell you this because I am a HARD CUSTOMER to please when it comes to self-tanner – like, once you’ve had the spray tan of your dreams, can anything compare?! And thankfully, the answer is YES (but only if you use the mitt, TBH). I live alone and lack coordination so I just apply this in the area that the sun actually hits (arms, legs, shoulders, chest, etc.) and my favorite thing about this foam in particular is that it blends super naturally – like, I tan the parts of my upper thighs that see the light of day, but skip going any higher (no need to tan my butt if nobody’s looking, ya know?) and there’s never a crazy line of demarcation, thanks to the mitt. Just be careful around your wrists and ankles and you’ll be glowin’ in no time, guys. It’s the gold standard for a reason! Rating: 9/10 (would be a 10/10 if I hadn’t been spoiled by the in-person spray tan wizards though) Mallory Emily turned me onto self-tanning pretty much immediately upon joining the company. I was a little reluctant at first because I didn’t know how to tan and I didn’t want to walk around like a streaky little carrot, but then this thing called the pandemic happened and I was no longer afraid of people making fun of me for how bad my first self-tan would look (because we were seeing nobody!!) We used the entire bottle between 2 people the first time we tanned (would not recommend) but now I’ve gotten the hang of applying it and I LOVE me a self-tan especially in the summer since I sunburn instead of tanning naturally. Oh, also I’ve tried the St. Tropez express tan as well (because I’m bad at planning when I want to be tan and I always wish I could tan immediately) and it works GREAT. 1 hour is a light glow, 2 hours is a decent tan, and 3 hours you’re BRONZED. I love this product. Rating: 10/10!

The 3 Things In Our Carts That We Really Hope Go On Sale This Weekend

Everyone has their weird secret hobby. Building enormous online shopping carts is mine. Take a walk? Go outside? Call a friend? Do some dishes? PASS. Why would I do something productive when I could use that same time to look at every single page on the Anthropologie website and add every single thing I’d ever want to my cart just so I can think wow, if I ever won the lottery, I could probably spend about $30,000 here! (I bet that no one actually needs a checkout page to tell them they could drop that much at Anthro, but there is something fun about seeing just how much money you’d need to buy ALL THE THINGS.) Folks, I have carts like this on hundreds of websites. The amount of imaginary money I have tied up in these aspirational checkout pages could single-handedly stimulate the entire US economy while raising the GDP. It’s so much stuff, you guys. With all this said, Memorial Day sales are IMPORTANT to me. Sure, you can get some good deals (and please come back this Saturday, because I’m working on a round up of the best sales along with some EHD exclusive coupon codes!), but I’m mainly excited because I CAN WATCH MY CART PRICES CHANGE. And by a lot! Like, thousands of dollars (that I don’t even have to begin with, but who cares)! IT IS THRILLING. I swear I wasn’t this much of a loser before quarantine, but this is really all I have to look forward to now. I’m not joking about not having any other hobbies. Please indulge me. ANYWAY — because I’m very nosy in addition to being a big ol’ loser (a winning combination!), I asked the rest of Team EHD what they’re currently hoarding in their online shopping carts. And because they are good and kind people, they each told me about 3 things in the lifestyle category they hope will go on sale this weekend. And because they have good taste and I also wanted all the things, I thought hey, if I turn this into a blog post, maybe some of the readers will respond and chat with me about online shopping, which sounds like a step up from what I’m currently doing. So without further ado, I present to you all the things we’re hoping to purchase this weekend on sale. PLEASE let me know about the things that you want to buy, too — I think we are best friends at this point and I truly want to hear about what you’re hoping to grab soon. LET’S GO! Apparel From Sara: All I’m wearing right now are summer dresses. They make me feel a little more put together than leggings and a t-shirt, but are still so roomy that they’re extremely comfortable. So I’m desperately hoping that this dress, this dress, and this dress will all go on sale. From Julie: One thing I can say for certain is that I will never outgrow a piece of clothing that looks like you tried but still feels like pajamas on your body. I’ve been eyeing these three jumpsuits from Free People so here is hoping at least one of them goes on sale sometime soon. This one looks so cozy and that burnt orange color is what I want to incorporate into a room one day. This one is like the more refined friend of the first and I’m not mad about it. This last one is very much more my style and has a vintage feel with the mixed stripes but it would definitely be an investment for me. From Ryann: It has been really warming up in LA recently (praise be) and since beaches are closed, I have resorted to tanning in my backyard and spraying myself with a hose. It is pretty bleak, so I’ve been searching for a new bathing suit to make this activity a little less depressing. I really love this one piece bathing suit and desperately want it to be mine. From Mallory: If I had an unlimited clothing budget, I’d strictly shop at Reformation. I don’t know what it is about the clothes and brand that I just identify with so much. It’s that store for me where I look at their stuff and want every single thing in my closet. I would LOVE a top that has a cute little neckline like this so I could wear it every single day during summer. IMAGINE the feeling of wearing this top to a picnic or this dress. I’d die of cute-clothes-ness. From Julie: It’s about that time of the year for me to swap out my leggings for shorts when doing my daily “run” aka run for about 5 minutes and walk for 15 around the neighborhood. The goal is for me to eventually run a half marathon (whenever those are a thing again) and so I am ready to get some real running shorts that don’t ride up after the first .25 mile. Everyone that I know who is an avid runner swears by these Strider Running Shorts by Patagonia. I’m finally ready to give them and running a real try. From Ryann: I am always in pursuit of the perfect pair of jeans so naturally whenever a national sale holiday comes around my brain automatically goes on a jean hunt. I have never spent more than $120 on jeans, but maybe that is why I have never felt completely satisfied? Maybe I need to splurge to find my one true love? I know that Emily is a really big fan of this brand, so when I was google searching “best jeans” and these popped up, I started to get all warm and fuzzy inside. They are out of my budget but if they go on sale…should I go for it? (please say yes). From Jess: My Girlfriend Collective leggings are my favorite leggings in the world. They are so soft AND are flattering, holding in my bits well. Lately, I have been wanting a new pair but buying another pair of leggings at full price seems silly right now. Regardless I REALLY hope that these midnight blue leggings go on sale (I also love the agave color) because I want them in my life and they are a great alternative to my go-to black ones. From Caitlin: When I actually hit the jackpot, Farm Rio will be my first stop. Y’all do not even WANT to know how much stuff is in my cart on this site — I spend an inordinate amount of time praying for HUGE sale here. While I don’t think their Memorial Day discounts are going to bring them into my price range (oof, maybe someday?), I am keeping a really close eye on these printed pants. I’m SUPER into lightweight summer pants this year for some reason (maybe because I feel like no germs can get through them? I know that’s wrong, but like, I truly think that’s what’s going on in my brain) and these feel like they’d make getting dressed a GOSH DARN DREAM. (Honorable mention goes to this adorable summer dress. FARM RIO PLEASE DO A PARTNERSHIP WITH EHD. My email is caitlin@emilyhendersondesign.com. This is not a joke.) Beauty From Emily: I got a sample of this in a swag bag from the Goop conference and every time I put it on my face I GLOW and people say ‘wow your skin looks great.’ I have dry skin and I need a lot of daily hydration but I hate thick creams (I like things to get deep, fast). Warning: I put it on my hair once and because my hair is blonde and curly (therefore so porous) it made it feel disgusting and greasy, so even though it says ‘face, hair and body’ be careful of the hair part. Anyway, I’m almost out of this and very excited to re-up. From Sara: I got a sample of this from a friend, and I’m slightly obsessed. It’s a thick, slightly pearlescent oil serum that makes my face look very fresh and dewy. Basically it does exactly what it says it will. I was mixing a little drop into my Supergoop CC cream (the only makeup I wear these days – love it so much I’ve replaced my IT Cosmetics CC cream with it), to thin it out a bit and give it an extra boost of moisture, and it’s a dream team for my face. Truly hoping it goes on sale, but I’m about to buy a full-size bottle in two days when I’m out of my sample regardless. From Jess: I mentioned a few weeks ago in this Link Up that I was starting a retinol serum and I have to tell you that I love it so much. The one I am using is Shani Darden’s Texture Reform which is apparently great for people with sensitive skin which I definitely have (and is vegan, cruelty-free, and comes in recyclable packaging). So far there has been zero “downtime,” it smells great and I love the way my skin is responding. BUT that is not what I hope goes on sale (well I do for you, but I just bought it). Nope, I hope that Tan Lux’s THE FACE Illuminating Self-Tan Drops do because now that I am using retinol I have to be even more diligent about protecting my face in the sun. I know that I will be “happy when I’m older” that I saved my skin but the idea not have a tan on my face makes maybe ever again me embarrassingly sad. It’s so vain but it’s just the truth. But I think there’s hope since these drops are highly rated and you can just mix them in with your moisturizer or serum. It sounds so easy. Can I have the best of both worlds??? I really really hope so… but at a lower sale price, of course. From Sara: It would be a true DREAM if this perfume went on sale, because it’s my absolute favorite summer scent and I’m almost out. Whenever I want to test a new perfume, I buy the travel roller ball size first, and even if I love a scent, if I don’t use the travel size then I know I’m not wearing it often enough to invest in the full size (no matter how pretty the bottle). This scent just smells like warm summer evenings when the sun takes forever to go down, an extra glass of rose, and laying in hammock with your friends listening to the live jazz music from the bar down the street. Yea, it’s THAT good. From Julie: As of late, my skin has been acting up more than usual. I’m not sure if it’s the lack of sunshine and fresh air or that my diet has shifted but I’ve developed these really small and plentiful pimples on my forehead that just won’t seem to go away. Good Times. I really want to try this pore treatment because not only are there over 1,650 5-star reviews for it on Sephora, I also know that Emily has mentioned it a handful of times before for the skin magic that it performs. I can just never bring my frugal self to hit add to cart for its high price point (even though I know it would probably do the trick). So here’s to hoping I can finally find a deal! From Jess: I have been eyeing this perfume brand since I started at EHD. Sara and Brady introduced me to the high-end world of perfumery and Le Labo specifically. While I love the scent of a beautiful perfume, Light Blue by Dolce & Gabana (the scent of the 2006) has been as pricey and luxurious as I have gone:) Since then I have been basically running around naked, no perfumes at all. But GUYS, Santal 33 and Bergamote 22 are what I want heaven to smell like. Last year I found out you can buy samples for $6 which I gleefully took part in but I think I need this smell in my life right now, full-time. I need that daily pick me up desperately. A reminder of simpler times if you will. So I am crossing my fingers and toes that they go on sale so I can justify spending the (slightly less) insane amount of money on just one of them. I think I will start with Santal?? Accessories From Emily: I’m placing far too much value and attention on this headband and while it is expensive (it’s leather and one of my favorite designers), hopefully a sale will help me justify the price. From Ryann: I have never had a solid jewelry collection and I’d really like that to change. I like simple, dainty gold jewelry so this bracelet seems like the perfect fit. My birthday is coming up next month so I am thinking this would be a great early birthday present from me to me :) From Mallory: I usually think to buy fashion items in this order: 1. Shoes 2. More shoes 3. Comfy pants 4. Tops 5. Dresses…. 50. Bags. I literally buy a bag once every hundred years because honestly I just buy one and forget about it until it looks disgusting and not acceptable to bring in public. But, Emily has this in a lil fanny pack version and I’ve always thought it was VERY cute, but I never thought I was the fanny pack type. THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN I found out it’s also a purse!! And not just a purse…a crossbody (my favorite)!! It’s light to carry but spacious enough for all your everyday stuff, plus it’s incredibly good quality so it will last for years. I’ll be watching this one for a sale…watching VERY closely… From Caitlin: Like Ryann, I’ve never been much of a jewelry person because I’m always like “holy crap, why is this so small and expensive?” But last year I picked up this personalized gold necklace, per Em’s recommendation, and I’ve worn it every day since. It’s been 6 months and it hasn’t peeled or changed color (even though I don’t take it off and I wear it in the shower, gross, sorry), so I’m now looking to add this one to my collection. At 58 bucks, it’s already a really good price for the quality, but I’m just hoping it comes down a lil bit this weekend. Also it’s from a small business AND women make up 96% of their staff so they’re truly just one of my favorite retailers across the board. From Mallory: I started working out this year for the first time ever, and now that we’re at home all the time, it has become one of my daily activities. Mostly because of two reasons: 1. It fills up some of the time I have on my hands and 2. My body gets FLOODED with happy endorphins and it makes me feel great during a time of so much uncertainty. Since I’m still pretty new to the workout game, I’ve been doing some research and investigating cute workout garb because when I feel cute it makes me want to exercise more. I already linked these leggings (which are such a steal for $19 and 77% off) but now I need some shoes to go with them. I’m thinking because I got the leggings for such a good deal, I’m in the market to splurge a little on a good workout shoe that goes with everything. Instagram knew I was looking (as always), targeted me, and showed me this brand which I am very intrigued by. It’s called APL and they’ve now been popping up everywhere for me (plus their stores look like space ships…have you seen them?) I really like this slip on situation, but they are on the higher end of workout shoe prices, so I’m watching very closely to see if they go on sale. From Caitlin: AHH I actually need help deciding on something, SOS! I’m pretty sure you don’t actually work at EHD until you get your first pair of Nisolos. I’ve accumulated 5 pairs (2 boots, 2 mules, and 1 oxford) over the past year and they’re all I wear but now it’s hot and I want a summer version! I’ve budgeted for 2 pairs, so I’m trying to decide between this heeled sandal in nude, this slip on (in bone or sand? I can’t pick!), this open-toed mule in sand (I have the closed-toe and love it), this open-toed slide (again, bone or sand?!), or this huarache sandal in bone. I think I’m going to go with the slip on for sure, but I like the rest of my options equally. Which ones would you get? (And wow, what is it like to be able to make decisions for yourself without asking others? Can you teach me?) And One Home Thing (Because This is a Design Site, After All) From Emily: I’m CRAVING color and pattern and interest and this side table would be great in our living room to help amp it up near some chairs that are more timeless (aka less interesting). A $500 side table is expensive (it does have bone in-lay) so let’s hope it goes on sale… OH BOY, IT’S CAITLIN AGAIN. Wow, that’s a lot of stuff in our carts! And now that we’re done, what’s in your cart? Let me know and maybe I can tip you off on how good a certain sale is going to be, or I can help you pick a color, or we can compare options, or something else. Maybe we can talk about any weird internet quirks that you have. IDK. I’m open to suggestions. Let’s chat RIGHT DOWN THERE about whatever you want, OK?

What I Wore This Week On Our Secret Shoot (That Are Pretty Perfect Outfits For The Winter-To-Spring Transition)

For the last 6 days, we’ve had all hands on deck shooting a new line of something we are launching this spring (I’m writing this the day after we wrapped and celebrated so my brain is sooooo wiped I can barely think). We produced this in-house (a huge shout out to Gretch who killed it!!!! It went so well!!) which meant it was a huge financial investment on my part so the goal was to get as many photos, videos, reels, etc as possible in the six days – which meant that I had to change outfits like 6 times a day to take versions with and without me, lying down, being cozy, standing up, fancy portraits, etc. I’ve been doing this for 15 years so I’m pretty comfortable getting my photo taken, but it’s still crucial that I feel good in what I’m wearing. If I don’t feel good, I bring insecure energy, which makes the entire crew suffer because it takes so much longer to get the “right shot”. I’m SOOO grateful that Kaitlin can shoot so fast and makes me feel really comfortable:) Anyway, here are some of the outfits – admittedly that are on the more casual side. But I also think that if you are looking for some good winter-to-spring recs, you’ll find some great pieces in here. The fancier outfits were designer that I rented for the portraits so you’ll see them later :) The jean shacket was a big investment and while I love it I’m hoping to exchange it for a smaller size but it’s really, really cute. The mini skirt is Madewell (via Nordstroms) and I’m wearing a small (Madewell sizing always runs big and I could have sized down but you know how they have like four xxxxxxs sizes which honestly make it confusing to know what size you are). Right now I’m solidly in between a 4 and 6 (so I guess a 5, LOL) if that helps – but I do wish I had bought an XS. It’s tweed and structured and pretty dang cute. The clogs are so comfy (for heels), I wear them all the time and even replaced them already because Buttercup ate one last year. And yes that bear shirt is rad. I knew that this sweater with the big black stripe would be really cute on camera in a snuggled-up shot and it was. The stripe was really graphic and popped really well on camera. I wore it with my Old Navy boyfriend jeans that are still just so cute (and I think like $24 right now). Another cozy look – An oversized cardigan (LOVE) with fisherman vibes, over the bear shirt (from The Great, which you know I love because they do everything casual just perfectly, but are such investments) with the same Old Navy jeans. Don’t hate on my drop crotch R13 jeans – I however, do hate that they are so expensive, but I’ve worn them probably 80 times since I bought them last year for my big Rugs shoot (extremely drop crotch and def not everyone’s cup of tea but I find that they make every outfit look cool and are so comfortable!!). The dark burgundy snakeskin boots make any outfit look more professional, even beat up drop crotch jeans :) Another oversized sweater with a great graphic sleeve punch. This sweater is a bit long and wide (I bought both a medium and a small to see which would fit better and they are both really really oversized. The jeans are Madewell’s barrel jeans that I think are excellent because they aren’t crazy high-waisted like a lot of barrel jeans (with big boobs and a short torso I can’t do both high-waisted and wide-legged). Big fan of these. And those kitten-heel boots are still in the mix – I wear them all the time when I want to dress something up without wearing high heels. The Levi’s are vintage – sorry – that I’ve had forever. I really like this sweater from Rails – cable knit with pretty white stitching. Oh, and I ended up wearing those flats a ton (both in blue and nude) last week mostly because they were easy to pop on and off for our casual snuggling shots that I had to do. Big fan. I was HIGHLY influenced by Kaitlin to get leopard pants and boy am I glad I did. These are SO CUTE and I didn’t realize how easy they are to make a basic outfit look stylish. I think the key is not dressing this up too much or it looks RHONJ, but these pants are dope and I love them with a casual top a lot (I wore it with wooden clogs, too which gave me nice height so that the cropped length was highlighted). Oh and yes, I’m wearing hair extensions in some of these shots :) I bought this new sweatshirt from The Great and god, the slouchy cut is just so perfect but I wish that size 0 was in stock because it’s so oversized (but I know I’ll still wear it so much!!). The pants are old but still available from Free People and pretty awesome. I bought two new denim jumpsuits because my dog ate the crotch out of my old one that I loved soooo much. This one (on the left) with long sleeves is from Amo and I bought both the small and medium, unsure of what size would work, but I’m returning the small because while it technically fit the waist is too snatched and therefore uncomfortable. I really think that brands need to get the memo that these jumpsuits shouldn’t be fitted or body-conscious – the whole point is to rock a utilitarian vibe and be comfortable – we don’t need our waist to look small, we want pockets and a good drape. Pistola does this really well (the camo) and I bought this denim one and LOVED it even more than the camo since it’s just a bit thicker. So while I love the darker wash of the Amo a lot (and I’m keeping the medium size – which I’m wearing above), I think that this Pistola jumpsuit has a better, more casual shape that will be easier to throw on – it just hangs in a nicer way. But if you want to wear a jumpsuit to the office, perhaps the Amo one looks more professional and can be dressed up better, for sure (my goodness that was a lot of talk about jumpsuits – but I wear them a ton, and have for years, because they look good on camera and are so easy to work/style in as well so I feel like I’m a jumpsuit expert). I promise the reveal of the shoot will be worth it (!) and hopefully, some of these outfits have given you some solid winter-to-spring outfit ideas.
